MARCELINO (MARCEL) VALDEZ JOAQUIN JR.
Passed on: March 19, 2022
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

It is with profound sadness that the family of Marcel Joaquin announce his sudden passing on March 19, 2022 at the age of 57.

Marcel was born in the Philippines and emigrated to Winnipeg with his family at the age of 9. He was predeceased by his father Marcelino Joaquin (2015). He was a loving husband to his wife of 32 years, Marjorie Soldevilla, and a proud father to his three children, Matthew (Uyen), Michael and Mark - all blessed with his thirst for knowledge and caring heart.

He was a Chartered Professional Accountant, CMA. He graduated from the University of MB (UM) with a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree. He was a faculty member at both the University of Winnipeg, and the UM for over 20 years teaching Info Systems Management and Business and Financial Management courses. Marcel was recognized with a teaching award from the Canadian Institute of Management for his role as instructor and mentor at the UM.

Marcel had a successful career in both public and private sectors (20 years). He held executive positions with both the Federal (Agriculture Canada) and Provincial governments (Property Registry, Consumer Affairs, Industry, Education). He also worked at CRA as a Senior Revenue Canada tax auditor. Marcel then ventured into the private sector where he was VP of Finance with MB Harvest Hemp Foods and later CFO and co-founder of IQDigitec until his passing.

Marcel made time for his family. He enjoyed family road trips, camping, travelling and giving back to the community. He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus brotherhood at the St. Vital Catholic Church and was active in the parish as Eucharistic Minister, porter, delivered Christmas hampers and helped Marjorie in fundraisers for Development and Peace and Child Haven Int’l. He served in several boards including the Philippine Canadian Centre of MB, and most recently the Financial Executives International (FEI Canada).

His loss will be mourned by his mother Pat, brothers Jessie (Melissa), Jerry (Marie-Anne) and nephews Julian, Cole and niece Cassandra, and his in-laws especially the Soldevilla family, and many relatives and friends. Marcel enriched the lives of his family, friends and community. We will miss him deeply.

Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. with viewing starting 9:00 a.m. at the St. Vital Parish, 1629 Pembina Highway. Private family internment will take place at a later date at Glen Lawn Cemetery, Family and friends may sign a book of condolence at www.glenlawn.ca.

  • Passed away too soon but I will treasure Marcel's mentorship, the hours long discussions about business and family, the way we learned together, and the way we supported each other. Above all, I will miss your perspective on how our first first-world problems are minor compared to third-world problems. Marcel, you will be missed. - Posted by: Al Wong (IQdigitec partner and friend) on: Apr 02, 2022
