SHARON AND LARRY ZARYCHANSKI
With a profound sense of loss we announce the sudden passing of Sharon Zarychanski (Prociuk) on Saturday, March 26, 2022, after contracting Covid-19, and Lawrence Zarychanski on Friday, April 8, 2022, following a lengthy battle with cancer. Elmwood High School sweethearts and inseparable for nearly 60 years, they entered into Heaven together.
Sharon was born in Winnipeg on September 6, 1947. She was predeceased by her father, John Prociuk. She is survived by her mother, Ollie Prociuk, and her sister, Linda (Edward). Larry was born in Winnipeg on April 20, 1944. He was predeceased by his parents, August and Nettie Zarychanski, brother, Gordon, and sister-in-law, Cathy. They are survived by their children: daughter Shayla (Greg) and son Ryan (Sarah); grandchildren, Tyler, Erica, Shaun, Alexei and Sophieanne; nieces, Tara (Chris), Pam (Reuben), Leslie (Brad) and nephew, Mark.
Larry and Sharon were married on September 16, 1967 at St. Alphonsus Church and shortly thereafter moved to Charleswood to raise their family. Sharon always wanted to be involved and was not afraid to lead, whether as a Brownie leader, Sunday school teacher, lector coordinator or cottage association president. Her house and life was a Master Class in record-keeping and organization - admirable traits and behaviours that helped her be so impactful. She was known for cake decorating, sewing/petit point and her extensive flower gardens. She volunteered where needed and provided project management support for all of Dad's church activities at Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Sharon worked for 30 years with the CIBC and then 10 years with the Bank of Nova Scotia, retiring as a loan and mortgage officer. Our mom's superpower was caring for her family. She thrived on meal-prep and feeding us. She loved supporting her own mother in any way needed and spoiling the grandchildren.
Larry dedicated countless hours with the Knights of Columbus, serving as Grand Knight on his church council and State District Deputy and Faithful Navigator for the 4th degree Miles Macdonell Council. In 2009 he was awarded Knight of the Year. Together with his brother knights, for over 25 years Dad proudly raised funds for local charitable organizations and Catholic schools. Larry spent the majority of his professional career as the manager of the Hudson's Bay Distribution Centre, followed by a similar role at the SAAN Distribution Centre. Our father had a warm and welcoming heart. If a friend or family member needed help - he could be counted on. He would strike a conversation with anyone at any time; a new friend was only a conversation away.
Building and living in community was extremely important to Larry and Sharon. Both Mom and Dad loved to entertain and plan events with the Kersey Bay neighbours. We have warm memories of the Kersey Bay birthday celebrations, block parties and Grey Cup festivities. Together they built the family cottage at Lake Shore Heights where lasting memories were made with their children and the "cottage gang." They were both extensively involved in their Church community, performed many roles over the decades, and welcomed parishioners as extended family. They enjoyed annual trips to Mazatlan and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on an Alaskan cruise. Larry and Sharon cherished, beyond measure, their children and grandchildren. We, their son and daughter, are eternally grateful for the many sacrifices they made so that we could succeed. They loved spending time with their grandchildren and will miss them dearly; they were interested and involved in all that the grandchildren were up to. We will all miss "Sunday supper" at mom and dad's - a tradition started by our own grandmother (Ollie), and continued by Sharon. Our mom loved to cook and we love to eat - more importantly, the meal provided a consistent opportunity to connect with each other as a family.
The family would like to thank the medical staff on 3-North at Grace Hospital for their care of Mom as well as CancerCare Manitoba and the Grace Hospice staff for their care of Dad. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Agape Table or CancerCare Manitoba Foundation to honour the legacy of our parent's dedication to helping those in need and those who are suffering.
A joint funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 4588 Roblin Blvd., on Thursday, April 14 at 11:00 a.m. We warmly welcome all those who are fully vaccinated. The mass can also be streamed in real-time for those who would like to join from a distance. Visit https://www.olphwinnipeg.ca to access the online link. A private interment will follow. Mrs. Zary set the bar high for all of us who are moms, wives and career driven. How she managed to do it all with grace, showing leadership in every arena, and with peach Tang and delicious food always at the ready, still mystifies me. I will always remember Mr Zary for his ready smile, infectious laugh and partnership in Mrs Zary's hard work and dedication to all things family. I am sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Pamela Hans (Friend) on: Apr 18, 2022

I'm am so sorry for your family's loss and the loss for all friends and extended family. It was always a pleasure to see Sharon and Larry at family events, with their warm welcoming smiles, Sharon's scrumptious desserts and Larry always quick with a joke. I know my parents cherished their friendship and will miss playing canasta with them. It is heartbreaking to see these traditions end. Please accept my deepest sympathies. - Posted by: Valerie Taraska (a branch of the cousin tree) on: Apr 14, 2022

My time at the Zarychanski family cottage back in the 80s still holds some of my happiest memories. I am grateful for my time with this wonderful family, except for the home perm that Sharon gave me! May they rest in peace together. - Posted by: Sonia Van Cauwenberghe (Friend ) on: Apr 12, 2022

Shayla and Ryan Your parents were good neighbors who became good friends. Whether we visited on Kersey Bay or Calgary or Regina or Grande Beach or Mazatlan or Okotoks, we always enjoyed our time together. They will be greatly missed. We will join you on Thursday via youtube, but our spirits will be there with you. Peggy and Gary McNeil - Posted by: Gary and Peggy McNeil (friends) on: Apr 12, 2022

Our family disaster plan was to make it 3 doors around the bay to the Zarychanski's where there was enough food to feed a small army until world order was restored. Wonderful memories of Sunday evening coffee when the kids were young, street parties and hearing Larry's snowblower after a storm as he blew out everyone's driveway on Kersey Bay. Our hearts are with you Shayla, Ryan and kids. - Posted by: Chuck and Valerie Waters (Former neighbour and friends for 47 years) on: Apr 12, 2022

Dear Shayla, Ryan and your dear families. No words can change the emptiness the loss of your mom and dad has created. I was lucky to meet them when I was 15 and share the various paths our lives took over the past 50 plus years. They took great pride sharing stories of their grandchildren so that I felt I knew them even if we hadn’t met. They were great listeners to my tales as well. I will miss our visits and updates but take comfort they are together again, as always. (I’m sure your mom is finding something to organize and your dad something to fix!). Sending hugs to you all, love Irene. - Posted by: Irene Shaw (Family friend (over 50 years)) on: Apr 11, 2022

Ryan and Shayla I am so sorry for your loss. Kersey Bay was such an incredible place to grow up and your parents were a big part of it. I have wonderful memories of the block parties and the silly adventures they shared with my parents (and all the neighbours). Whenever I saw them on the street your mom and dad were always happy to share stories about you and your children - you were their pride and joy. May you find comfort in each other, your families and your memories. My deepest condolences. Tracey - Posted by: Tracey Maconachie (Moore) (Kersey Bay Neighbour ) on: Apr 11, 2022

Our deepest condolences to the family of Sharon and Larry. They were part of our Kersey Bay family friends, for over 40 years Our twins Derek and Bradley went to school with their daughter, we had street parties together, we celebrate together when there is something to celebrate. We would give one and other ideas on doing different things, the last idea we share is when we were getting our sunroom built. They will be missed. May they rest in peace as we keep them in our prayers. Lucy and Joshua Cummings and sons. - Posted by: Lucy and Joshua Cummings (Neighbors) on: Apr 11, 2022

Larry & Sharon were our next door neighbours for 44 years. We shared a planter for flowers instead of a fence. We planted annuals each year alternating who did it either Sharon or myself. It was beautiful and very enjoyable. We could always count on each other for anything that came up. I’m sure that Sharon & Larry will be tending gardens in heaven. She made me promise that she wanted lots of flowers at her funeral but I would like to honour some of her wish and take flowers to her final resting place when that is possible.. Larry & Sharon Rest In Peace and say hello to Fern for me. ❤️❤️ - Posted by: Jeannette Labossiere (44 years Kersey Bay neighbor ) on: Apr 11, 2022

It takes a village to raise a child. Kersey Bay was my village. Mr. and Mrs. Zary were on village council. They rest in my memory as organizers, nurturers, and creators of fun! I feel grateful for the role they played in my happy childhood. Rest peacefully. - Posted by: Marnie Waters (Neighbour and childhood friend of Shayla and Ryan) on: Apr 11, 2022

It is with sadness that we read of the passing of a beautiful couple. Larry was a classmate of ours at Elmwood High School. His smile and great sense of humour will not be forgotten, and neither will his well-groomed hair. . . always perfect! Sharon, who had such a lovely smile and radiated love, was a former Winnipeg Blue Bomberette. She will be remembered at the organization's 70th Celebration this year. What a shock that Larry and Sharon's lives ended so suddenly! It is reassuring that their legacy of love will never die. It lives on in those whose lives they touched. May wonderful memories help to ease the family's great loss. Dear Shayla, Ryan and family, Words cannot express our sorrow upon hearing of the passing of both your parents. We extend our deepest condolences to you all during this difficult time. As our parents were close lifelong friends, I (Clay) will always remember Aunty Sharon and Uncle Larry’s warm and welcoming nature during our many years of Boxing Day brunch gatherings - sentiments that were extended to my wife and kids in later years. I could have sat and listened to our parents lively discussions, with our dads’ hearty laughs, for hours. We will miss them both dearly and are sending prayers as your close-knit families adjust to this terrible loss. - Posted by: Clay & Stacey Bittner (Family friends) on: Apr 09, 2022

I have no words to describe how devastated I am to hear the passing of Larry and Sharon. I have known them personally for 30 years. My mother told me stories of how Larry and Sharon greeted me as my parents brought me home from the hospital as a baby for the first time. They watched me grow up as my next door neighbours and never hesitated to cheer on my dancing in the front lawn or spark up a conversation. They always spoke very highly of their family, especially their children and grandchildren. They were very proud parents and grandparents and that was evident through their many conversations with us. My parents and I cared for them as you would extended family. If my parents were here today they would be devastated. We always shared conversations about the couple next-door and how we were so grateful to have such wonderful neighbours for so long. It’s an understatement to say that they will be greatly missed. We may have lost two wonderful people, but I know my parents and Larry and Sharon are all together in a much better place and who knows, maybe even next door neighbours! On behalf of my family I would like to send our condolences to the family. I am so sorry for your loss. Stay strong and God bless. - Posted by: Kayla Jeffries (The Jeffries Family) (Neighbours for over 30 years) on: Apr 09, 2022

I cannot find the words to express my sadness and offer condolences to Shayla and Ryan and their families. Larry and Sharon were pillars of light and strength to me, their love for each other was always evident and their love of others was worn on their sleeves. Larry's sense of humour and easy laugh were contagious. Sharon was always thinking, planning, doing, and being there when one needed her. A great team together.
