KENNETH WILLIAM HEMMETT
On Monday afternoon, April 4, 2022, Kenneth William Hemmett, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and soon to be great-grandfather, left us to embark on another adventure.
He leaves to mourn his best friend and wife of 58-plus years, Connie; his beloved sons, Jeff and Kelly; their wives and Ken's special "daughters", Cheryl and Kerri; his four grandchildren, Carlynn (Dylan), Katie (Brendan), Connor (Jessica), and Devon; along with his grand-puppies, many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. He was predeceased by both of his parents, Ed and Hazel Hemmett (nee Krieger), as well as his two brothers, Donald and Bruce.
Ken's adventure on this earth began in Winnipeg on December 13, 1943. He attended Cecil Rhodes and TecVoc Schools, following which he became an electrical apprentice at CP Rail's Weston Shops. While completing his apprenticeship he met and married Ruth (Connie) Wawruck in 1964. Following their marriage and the births of first Jeff and then Kelly, the young family moved to Calgary in 1970, and then to the international oil patch in 1972.
At the ripe old age of 48, Ken began his 30 years of retirement, enjoying his home, his expanding family, and his cottage at Ingolf. In more recent years, Ken and Connie gave up their lake retreat and spent fifteen winters in Arizona, and in 2014 they celebrated their 50th anniversary on a Mexican cruise.
During these years, Ken became the major caregiver for his wife after her brain surgery; a few years later he had to have a series of heart- and circulation-related surgeries. Little did he or anyone else suspect that one day it would be cancer, not a heart attack that would very quickly and tragically bring his life to an end.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the Selkirk General Hospital and Riverview Health Centre Palliative Care Unit staffs, and to Dr. Carey Isaac for his special personal care during Ken's final days.
Those wishing to make monetary donations in Ken's memory please consider making them to the Never Alone Cancer Foundation, https://never alonefoundation.ca/ or to the Palliative Care Unit at Riverview Health Centre, https://rhc.mb.ca/rhc-foundation/.
A private visitation and interment will take place at Glen Lawn Funeral Home on Monday morning, April 11, 2022. Following this, fully vaccinated friends, extended family and loved ones are invited to attend a public reception and celebration of Ken's life starting at 2:00 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the Manitoba Club, 194 Broadway.
