FRANCES LIM
MD, FRCSC
June 29, 1938 - April 7, 2022
It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of the bedrock of our family, Dr. Frances Lim.
Cherished wife of Heng Cheah, loving mother of Liping (Norman) and Lijen (Sunny), devoted and doting popo to Kailin and Kaiyan.
The youngest of nine children, Frances demonstrated her intellectual excellence early on, skipping multiple grades upon entering school. After graduating from Nanyang University, in Singapore, she set sail for Canada to further her studies. She was one of only three women in her medical school class at Queen's University and one of very few women to pursue a career in surgery. She had a rich and fulfilling career as an obstetrician/gynecologist in Winnipeg, bringing multiple generations of babies into the world, often from the same family! Although her work was her passion, after retiring, she transitioned easily and happily into her new, self-proclaimed vocation in Toronto - popo to her two grandchildren. Once she retired, Mom also took her other passion, travelling, to another level, visiting five continents with Dad. Their 56-year marriage was a truly symbiotic relationship and was a testament to the beauty and power of unconditional love and unwavering devotion.
In the last decade of her life, particularly the last three years, Frances faced and mightily overcame a series of devastating health setbacks. Her tenacious spirit and determination to recover during this time was always inspiring and often beyond belief. We are so grateful for the additional time we were able to share with her.
We would like to thank the staff at the Wexford Residence, in particular, Dr. Larry Bacher, and the staff at Scarborough General Hospital, in particular Dr. Howard Clasky, for their dedicated care of our mother.
A private family gathering has taken place. Due to the current Covid surge, a celebration of her remarkable life is planned for her birthday, in June.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation to Doctors Without Borders, or to a charity of your choice.

We were blessed to have had Frances deliver all three of our children (1991, 1995, 1998). She was always a spirit of calm and professionalism, and I looked forward to her smiles and encouragement during our many appointments. We thank France's family for sharing her with so many other families just starting out. She truly gave everything in service of others. Bless you and keep you well. - Posted by: Wanda & Alan Prychitko (Patient) on: Jul 19, 2024

Dr. Lim delivered my daughter in 1997. I had never met her before that day. I really liked her giggle. The delivery got a bit tricky and Dr. Lim was an absolute hero. She stayed calm and got us both through safely. I have thought about that precious little lady so often through the years. My love to her family, I am so sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Judith (Patient) on: Apr 28, 2022

Dr Lim was an excellent teacher when I was doing my obstetrical rotation as a medical student at St Boniface Hospital in 1983. I especially remember doing a twin delivery with her. And repairing my first episiotomy. - Posted by: Margaret Reda(Millar) (medical student) on: Apr 28, 2022

My sincere condolences to Dr Lim’s family and friends. Dr Lim delivered all 3 of my sons, I trusted her with such precious cargo and her guidance, professionalism and deep caring nature helped a young mom navigate pregnancy and delivery. She made me feel as if she was a mom guiding her own daughter. Very happy retirement was such a joy for her! - Posted by: Aynsley Ward (Patient) on: Apr 20, 2022

While I don’t technically know Dr. Lim myself… she is one of the people I guess one could say I owe everything to her to an extent, I say this being the fact that this woman is the doctor behind my birth, who delivered me at St. Boniface. Being that I’m pregnant currently with my first, my mother happened across this news looking back on memories. My sincerest condolences and sympathies to the family in this time, I’m very sad to hear of this news. - Posted by: Sreanna Kereluk-Kochie (Former Patient’s Child ) on: Apr 19, 2022

Dr. Lim (and Dr. Chang) were on my mind a few weeks ago! I have lots of memories of Dr. Lim, including times she would share a visit/quick bite with us in the Nurses' Lounge. She was a regular attendee at the FBC reunions. I am so happy to hear she embraced retirement and got some rest, relaxation, delightful family connections and travel! May you find comfort in the stories, pictures, treasures, memories as you celebrate her life. - Posted by: Sandy Stalder (Colleague from VGH Family Birth Centre) on: Apr 19, 2022
