RUTH FLORENCE REID
November 14, 1935 – March 31, 2022
Sadly, we announce the sudden passing of Ruth Reid at her home in Surrey, BC.
Ruth is survived by her son Christopher Hume (Stacy) and her daughter Irene (Kyle) Brown and grandchildren, Faith, Sarah and Josiah.
Ruth was predeceased by her dad, mom and stepmom, Wilson Reid (2000), Margaret Reid (1973) and Irene Reid (2006) and her sister Shelagh Wilson (2005). She is survived by her brothers, Bob (Theresa) Reid in Saskatoon, Bill (Pat) Reid and sister Marg (Mitch) Oakes in Winnipeg and their families.
Ruth grew up in Norwood, making lifelong friends. She never lost her love for her hometown. She loved the prairies' sunny skies and cold snowy days, even minus 40 degrees! She was a leader at church and for 12 years in CGIT, living out their motto "to become the girl God would have me be." Her university degree in Education not only allowed for several years of teaching, but helped her as she worked in Christian Education at Westworth Church. During her busy parenting years in BC, she supported her husband Don Hume's ministry in Vancouver and Kitimat and served on various boards as well as teaching.
In 1991, after 20 plus years in BC, she returned to her beloved Winnipeg, being near her dad during his declining years. She was active in various areas. One of her accomplishments was organizing a prayer network. After 13 productive and happy years, she returned to BC to live near Irene and Kyle and her grandkids. Nana loved spending time with Faith, Sarah and Josiah, having her "one on one" visits with them weekly. Art, baking, playing games, reading and just hanging out built great memories and her influence will always be with them. The week before her death, she went swimming with family and went with Josiah on a favourite long outing on the Skytrain. She was walking daily, often with one of the kids.
Ruth's faith was a vibrant part of her life and she believed in the power of prayer. She was active in church life and in prayer movements in Winnipeg, BC, Canada and around the world. She trusted Jesus to get her through the storms of life, never giving up. She spent time daily praying for family, friends, various ministries and current issues in our world. Ruth had a strong desire to see social justice achieved. She supported many causes that would make our world a better place with letters, finances and volunteer efforts. She loved to keep in touch with friends and family through Facebook Messenger. She made many friends, whom she treasured. Her connections ran deep and wide and she will be missed by many.
Ruth had a love of travel. A first big trip happened in 1961, when she and a friend drove from Winnipeg to Mexico City with her 16 year old twin brothers, Bob and Bill! That spirit of adventure continued throughout her life as she travelled all over the world, volunteering and visiting ministries that she supported in India, Russia, Africa, Argentina and Israel. She loved trips to Greece, Europe and the UK. She also enjoyed visits with family and friends across Canada and the US.
Ruth filled her home with artwork, some of which she created. She loved beauty and colour, both in nature and in the arts. She enjoyed walks under fall leaves and spring blossoms and visiting art galleries and symphonies. In recent years, she enjoyed creating digital art.
Her life Bible verse was Proverbs 3:5,6 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight."

While we have not crossed paths for many years, the tributes here and elsewhere give clear testimony to the remarkable life and wonderful influence that Ruth both cultivated and enjoyed — an influence that will only fully be known in eternity. Sherry and I send our sincere condolences to her children, grandchildren, sister and brothers, and extended family members. Ruth's friendship and prayer support were important to us personally and to our ministry. We appreciated that she prayed for us faithfully and often, and that when she came to Winnipeg, she would make time to connect with us. She will be missed! - Posted by: Doug & Carolin Sadler (Friends) on: Apr 24, 2022

We remember Ruth with great fondness. She collected us from Winnipeg airport and looked after us when we arrived at our other cousin Marg's house. We were privileged to get to know her and able to repay the hospitality when she visited us in the UK with her daughter and son and she loved the countryside near us and the greenness of the area. She was a very special lady and we will miss her thoughtfulness and know we were remembered in her active prayer life. Very happy memories. - Posted by: Graham, Judith and Mark Errett (Cousin) on: Apr 24, 2022

Ruth was a great friend and confident as well as a prayer warrior. We met as strangers at a Conference rooming together and became instant friends. Her fingerprints are all over her beloved Winnipeg but stretched from the East to West Coast with her many connections. She loved connecting and trying hard to have lunch or fellowship with as many as she could when she came back home to Winnipeg and always enjoying the Fringe Festival making a point to visit when it was on. She had such a generous heart helping many in ministry. She was one of a kind and will be missed by so many including myself. So glad we will meet again. Love you and so honoured to call you friend. - Posted by: Marilyn Burdiak (Christian Friend) on: Apr 23, 2022

Ruth was a favourite CGIT leader to both my sister and me when we attended Norwood United Church in the 1950’s and early 60’s. Being one of the younger leaders, we enjoyed her friendly, enthusiastic ways! I still have a card she gave my sister on her CGIT graduation with the poem “IF” (for girls). The message still remains in my mind to this day. My sincere condolences to her family. - Posted by: Judi Parry (Acquaintance) on: Apr 23, 2022

It is with sadness that my wife Marge and I learned of the sudden passing of our friend Ruth Reid on March 31, 2022. Ruth was a great blessing to us during the years that she lived in Winnipeg between 1991 and 2004. She was a great prayer warrior and advocate for unity within the Body of Christ which is so vitally important. She had her personal views on many issues, but regardless of whether people agreed with her, she was always one who demonstrated a transcendent love that superseded any mental agreements or disagreements. I was privileged to work with her on projects like the March for Jesus in Winnipeg during the 1990s, a march that drew very large crowds, and also on the National Day of Prayer for Native Canadians that was held at the St. John Park in Winnipeg on June 21, 1999. In later years, whenever she would return to Winnipeg for a short visit, she was most often invite Marge and I over for lunch, and we would renew old times, praising God for what He had done in our past, and trusting Him for what is to come. I will always appreciate her legacy as one who had a heart for unity, a heart for reconciliation, and heart for the healing of all human relationships, which I believe is very much what is on the heart of our heavenly Father. As one of His beloved children, she reflected that unconditional love for all people well. - Posted by: Roger Armbruster (Friend) on: Apr 23, 2022
