RICHARD JUDSON RUTHERFORD

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Richard Rutherford, in his home on Friday, April 15, 2022 at the age of 87.
Richard is survived by his devoted life partner of 46 years, Philippe Hébert. Also mourning his loss are three sisters-in-law, Annette McCoubrey (James) of Toronto, ON, Hélène Lafantaisie (Martial) of St. Malo, MB, and Denise Pivovar (Myron) of Regina, SK and two brothers-in-law; Roger Hébert (Lorraine) of Ste. Anne, MB and Rhéal Hébert of New Westminster, BC. He will also be missed by a great number of nieces and nephews, and countless friends and neighbours. Richard was predeceased by his parents, Carleton and Mabel, and sister Jacquelyn.
Richard was born in Augusta, Georgia on March 28, 1935. He developed a love of dance at a very young age, and moved to New York City the day after his high school graduation to pursue his dream. He auditioned for a number of ballet companies and was offered a spot in the corps of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in 1957. Richard later admitted that he had no idea where Winnipeg was when he accepted the job. Needless to say, Winnipeg's extreme weather took some getting used to for a young man from the Southern United States. It was there that Richard met Phil and was quickly adopted by Phil's large Franco-Manitoban family.
Richard's career with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet lasted 20 years, from corps de ballet, to soloist, to principal dancer. After retiring from the stage in 1970 he was made Associate Artistic Director of the company. In 1977 he moved to Ottawa and joined the staff of the Canada Council for the Arts as the officer in charge of grants to individuals in dance.
In retirement, Richard committed himself to the campaign to create the Canadian Tribute to Human Rights, a monument located on Elgin Street in Ottawa. A humble man, it was not his style to discuss his illustrious career on and off the stage.
Richard enjoyed tending to the garden that he and Phil lovingly created, admired by many friends in the neighbourhood. Watching and feeding the birds, chipmunks and any other creatures who would visit was a cherished pastime. Known for his kindness and generosity, Richard always took great pleasure in being able to help others.
At Richard's request there will be no funeral. For those wishing to pay tribute to Richard's remarkable life, donations to his much adored Royal Winnipeg Ballet would be appreciated.
