RUDI ARON SCHULZ
February 11, 1928 - April 13, 2022

On April 13, 2022 Rudi passed peacefully at age 94 at Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home.
He leaves to mourn his wife of 68 years, Susan (Friesen), his children, Randal, Carla (Ken Riediger), and Ilana; his grandchildren, Eric (Lisa), Natalie (Thomas Dyck) and Mark, and his great-grandchildren, Matthew, Ivy, Jacob, and Julia. He was predeceased by his parents, Wilhelm and Agatha Schulz, and by all his siblings, Frieda (Jake Wiebe), William (Helen), Herbert in infancy, Henry (Tina) and Harry. He also leaves behind many in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
Rudi was born on February 11, 1928 in the Rural Municipality of Montcalm just a few years after his parents immigrated to Canada from Ukraine. His Early Education took place in Jerome school where he later began his teaching career at age 17. His high school education took place in Arnaud and Gretna, known as the MCI.
In 1953 he married his lovely bride Susan, his life partner, and raised three children together. They were inseparable until Covid. His pride in their family knew no bounds. Good health and fortune were, and still are, reason to thank God Almighty.
During the span of his teaching career Rudi earned a Master's degree in Education. After completing Normal School and short stints in teaching in Jerome and Gretna Public School, he began a 33 year teaching career in West Kildonan, later to become Seven Oaks School Division. The last 20 years of his teaching career were at West Kildonan Collegiate as Guidance Counsellor and Department Head. The teaching he loved most was with struggling Junior High students.
Rudi was an active member of the First Mennonite Church and enjoyed his participation in the church's choir for many years. He enjoyed sports and was grateful to have made so many friends curling and golfing, his two leisure passions. Rudi was a member of Pine Ridge Golf Course for well over 50 years and served as it's President for a term shortly after he retired in 1986. He liked to write poetic birthday cards and spent hours doing crosswords and reading in his later years.
The family is grateful to the many health care professionals and paramedics who attended to him, especially in the last year. A special thank you to Martha whose help during Rudi's two year stay at Bethania Haus was a blessing. Rudi received so much support there from the greater Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home (PCH) community. They made him feel so welcome when he visited wife Sue at neighbouring Bethania PCH. The loving care Rudi received from nurses and staff when he moved to Bethania PCH in the past few months is appreciated more than we can say here. Thank you so much.
In lieu of flowers and cards, donations can be made in his memory to Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home and The Mennonite Central Committee's Emergency Ukrainian Response or the Salvation Army Ukrainian Relief.
A graveside service and interment will be held at Glen Lawn Cemetery (Lagimodiere) on Thursday, May 19, 2022 at 2:00 p.m., rain or shine. All are welcome.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • On behalf of the late Herb and Maria Phyllis Peters we send our heartfelt condolences to the Schulz family. Our parents were lifelong friends with Rudi and Sue. More recently, before the Pandemic lockdowns, I had enjoyed many lunchtime conversations with Rudi in the Bethania dining room where he would have his lunch with Sue. Rudi like my Dad…..could tell a great story! Eugene, Lori, Renee & Dana - Posted by: Renee Rempel (Friend of the family) on: Apr 27, 2022

  • I remember Mr. Schulz when I was a high school student at West Kildonan collegiate in 1970 as a very kind and thoughtful gentleman. He was the only teacher who ever stopped to listen to me play my guitar and offer me praise and encouragement, and I then went on to become a professional musician. May I extend my condolences to his family. It seems he led a long and full life surrounded by the love of his family and friends. Rest in peace kind soul, Mr. Schultz. I will always remember you with fondness. - Posted by: Marla Berchard (Former student) on: Apr 24, 2022

  • I met Rudi many times..although I never really knew him personally I found him interesting Not sure if you could meet more dedicated children as his were..always visiting and taking them out..surely a loss to everyone - Posted by: Sonia Macario (Daughters friend) on: Apr 23, 2022

  • Deepest sympathy to the family for the passing of Rudy. He and Suzie were good friends of mine. Rudy sang in the Mens choir and I knew him from the Occasional choir. He always had a joke or two. I sat with him at coffee time at FMC after church services. I will truly miss him. Take care dear family. .. - Posted by: Edna Edwards (choral friend from FMC) on: Apr 23, 2022
