Jens was born on November 7, 1934 in Bottineau, North Dakota. He and his family lived in Goodlands and area, and then moved to Brandon when he started school. He had many favourite stories of his newspaper routes and the antics he and his friends got into. When he was 15 his family returned to the Christensen farm, just outside of Goodlands. During his last few years of high school and into his early adulthood, he formed friendships that would last a lifetime. He loved to tell stories of singing with his friends similar stories would be told near the end of his life, about singing with his daughter and her ukulele, entertaining staff and patients in the hospital ward where he recovered from illness. In 1963 Jens married Helen Moore. They had three children Jim (Ruth), Pat (Tracie), and Luanne. He and Helen enjoyed raising their family, instilling their children with good farm values. During the first 20 years of his retirement Jens and Helen lived in Deloraine and enjoyed watching their grandchildren go through childhood and become adults. Jens was predeceased by his parents Charlie and Louise, sister Charlyn, brother Dennis and his son, Pat.
