MARGARET (MAGGIE) DUBESKI

Maggie Dubeski passed away suddenly, surrounded by her family, on April 24, 2022. She was diagnosed with cancer last year. She was a beloved daughter, sister and aunt to her family as well as a cherished friend and foster parent to many.
Maggie was born in Winnipeg on July 27, 1952 and is survived by her loving family: siblings, Debbie (Wilf) Bedard, Nick Dubeski (Nancy Seeley), Chris (Julianna) Dubeski, and John Dubeski (Sheri Skalesky); nieces and nephews, Jamie (Sean) Carnegie, Lisa (Scott) Wise, Olivia, John (Kylie Rudd), and Emma Dubeski; and great-nieces and nephew, Meghan Carnegie, Abby, and Lucas Wise. She was predeceased by her parents, Ina Dubeski (Ruth) and John Dubeski.
In the early years of her career, Maggie worked in various administrative and accounting roles. She then transitioned to foster parenting which she dedicated herself to for more than 25 years. Caring for foster children was her calling and she provided a welcoming, loving home for many who needed a safe harbour. She was a fierce advocate for them at school and within the health system, always ensuring that Indigenous ways of knowing and being were at the center of their healing journey. She maintained a special connection with many long after they became adults, especially Becky, Michelle, and Elizabeth.
Maggie loved to travel and any trip with her was an adventure. Regardless if it was visiting New York or a road trip to Minnesota, there was never a dull moment. Each trip was full of laughter and good food. She especially looked forward to visiting with family in Nipigon. She loved to cook and decorate for the holidays. She would invite you to join her to decorate her Christmas tree, but would ensure you placed the ornaments in the correct spot.
Maggie leaves a big gap in the lives of her friends and family. She will be deeply missed.
A sacred fire was lit on April 27 to help guide Maggie on her journey to the spirit world. Our family thanks Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre for hosting this ceremony that also provided a special healing experience for those who attended. Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be planned at a later date. In the meantime, Maggie's family kindly requests that her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by visiting her tribute page at EthicalDeathCare.com. Memories and stories published by those who knew her are available there.
Flowers are gratefully declined. Maggie loved animals, especially the dogs and cats she kept as pets. Should you wish, donations can be made to Before the Bridge - Senior K-9 Rescue at www.beforethebridge.ca.
