JUNE (JEAN) HELEN HUGHES
(nee KENZIK)

April 15, 1934 - April 13, 2022

Unexpectedly, our beautiful mom was taken from us in her sleep.
Mom was born in Winnipeg and spent her youth in Weston attending Cecil Rhodes Schools and Tec Voc. She spoke often about her adventures and friends from the neighbourhood. Her grandparents lived close by, and mom spent many hours with her Baba and Gigi at their home. Once all of us kids were born, we finally settled down in Crestview where mom resided in the same home for 50 years. She took pride in owning this home, which was evident in the way she took care of her yard including the beautiful flowers that adorned it.
Mom worked at The Bay downtown for 20 years and kept them in business by shopping daily on her lunch break, including groceries from their basement grocery store and bringing them home on the bus. What a mother won't do for her family. She was a very independent woman, driving to her favourite stores and getting the best deals. That all changed in 2018 when our brother Jay D passed away, mom was never the same and never drove again.
Mom's favourite times were when we were together having a family dinner, which was a weekly occurrence, just like we did when we were kids with our grandparents, and dessert was a must. Then COVID hit and there was no shopping at all, and life was very difficult not being able to go anywhere for fear of catching COVID and we could see mom's health declining. Unfortunately, mom spent the last eight weeks of her life in the hospital as a result of a fall in her apartment. Due to COVID protocol, we were only able to visit with her about half that time.
Missing mom immensely are her kids, Marshall, Sheldon (Rosella), Misty Hughes-Newman (Wyatt Newman); grandsons, Dustin (Jenny, Hudson and Harper) and Dallas Wolas. Mom was predeceased by her parents, Julian and Anna Kenzik; sister Eileen; husband Frank; in-laws, Maurice and Dorothy Hughes; sister-in-law Frances; son in-law Bill Wolas; and her youngest, Jay D.
Cremation has taken place and no funeral service will be held.
We did not get to say goodbye, but our parting words during any visit or phone conversation was, I love you mom. Remember to tell your loved ones that you love them because you never know if it will be the last time you speak with them.

All your pain is gone, rest in peace mom,
we love you.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • My condolences on the passing of your mom and grandmother. I thought about her often when The Bay downtown shut its doors and she’s been on my mind recently with the current news. While in university in the 1980s, I was hired by The Bay to work in the 4th floor audit office at the downtown location. I worked with your mom. At the time, she was tasked with microfilming all of the sales receipts and I was her part time assistant. I have wonderful memories of those days. She took me under her wing and showed me the ropes as it was my first office job. I like to think that my work ethic I learned from my time working with June. I fondly remember those ladies from the 4th floor office as being a tight knit group of company gals and June was a big part of that. I will always remember her fondly. I am so sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Tracey Gallant (Former co-worker) on: Mar 22, 2025

  • Only met this lovely lady a couple of times many years ago through Misty. But I remember her smile; it was like she radiated sunshine. My husband and I send our condolences to the family. So very sorry for your loss. Cheryl (Pink) Gallant and Brian Gallant - Posted by: Cheryl Gallant (Friend of Misty's) on: Jan 09, 2023
