GREGORY JOHN (GREG) MACKENZIE
January 10, 1969 - April 26, 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Greg MacKenzie - Husband, Son, Brother, Uncle, Friend.
Greg grew up in Windsor Park where he was very active in playing hockey. He also had a keen interest in dirt bikes, so much so that he entered into competition. He also enjoyed hanging out with his brother Pat and bugging his little sister Monica whom he loved dearly.
Prior to joining Corrections Greg was instrumental developing a recycling program at Headingley Correctional Institution and surrounding municipality. Greg then spent over 25 years with Corrections - starting his career in The Pas before transferring to the Winnipeg Remand Centre where he spent a number of years as a member of the Correctional Emergency Response Team (CERU). In 2011 he transferred to the Women's Correctional Centre.
Greg was a friend to everyone and known for his endless ability to always see the good in others and the bright side in any situation.
Greg met his wife Maria in Winnipeg and had been together for eight blissful and blessed years. They both shared their love for travel together with their fur babies Chico and Bella. He enjoyed the comfort of his home and devoted his time with his family. He always looked forward to his wife's home cooked meal while watching a movie.
At the time of his death Greg was on the verge of retirement and had begun a new career on the road as a long haul trucker. He looked forward to the open road often in the company of Maria.
Greg is survived by his wife Maria Penalosa, mother Helena Fitzgerald, father John (Carol), sister Monica, brother-in-law Ron, nephew Lee, nieces, Neza and Sarina, as well as extended family. Greg was predeceased by his older brother Pat (Patrick).
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Greg to the Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way or Animal Services Agency, 1057 Logan Avenue.
The family is especially grateful to CancerCare Clinic and the staff of Health Sciences Centre Step Down Unit, GB-5 and GA-5 who gave their care and support during his two months stay. A special thank you to Ariel, Emma and Sarah who went far beyond in their care. The support of Bob and Patti always there. To Tim and the staff from Corrections, true friends until the end - in Greg's heart and ours.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31, 2022 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB.

  • Greg was a classmate in Correctional Officer training, he had a great sense of humor, was well liked and a good officer. I didn't keep in touch as often as I should have, but when I did see him it was like no time passed at all. He was like that - a great person! I know he will be missed by his Corrections family - Officer Mackenzie you are remembered - God bless. - Posted by: Carlos (Colleague) on: Jun 02, 2022
