• John Adair joined our department of fewer than 10 faculty members in 1965 and saw its rapid growth to over 50+ faculty members within seven years. He played a leading role in shaping the department into what it is today, along with John Zubeck and Alf Shepherd. He was instrumental in laying the groundwork for the clinical and social areas of the department, among others, and in relocating the department to a brand-new home, the Duff Roblin building in 1969. In becoming the department head in 1973, John undertook the Herculean task of overseeing the simultaneous career-starts of several dozen new-hires, while creating a vision for the department that continues to this day. As one of the ‘baker’s dozen’ hired in 1971, I was attracted to the department by its emerging stature in Western Canada, its brand-new research facilities, and its array of social psychologists. As a colleague, John cared deeply for the department and worked tirelessly to foster the development of its teaching and research programs. As an administrator, he brought the department to the attention of the university and the province, and as an academic leader, gave the department national prominence in the field of psychology. John’s research in the social psychology of the psychological experiment expanded his reach, and the department’s, to an international presence. Throughout my travels across Canada and overseas, it was not uncommon to meet someone for the first time who knew of the department because of John Adair. John inspired others as a supportive colleague, dedicated administrator, and top-notch researcher. His passion for the department, matched only by his passion for baseball, bettered all of us along the way.
