RICHARD SCOTT MERRELL

On May 25, 2022, at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, Scott passed away peacefully at age 74, with his wife Maxine and his brother Dave, holding each hand.
Scott's family takes comfort knowing that he is now reunited with all his other family and friends that left this world before him, including his mother Audrey who passed in 1992, father Clarence in 1998, brother Bob (1979), father-in-law Jim Walker (1983), mother-in-law Carrie Walker (1997), sister-in-law Lorna Lanuke (1994), sister-in-law Donna Graham (1997), brother-in-law Tom Walker (2015), sister-in-law Gwen Walker (2021), and nephew Mitchell Lanuke (1976).
Scott was loved by many. He will be missed by the Merrell family, namely his wife Maxine; son Todd, daughter-in-law, Hayley, grandchildren, Dexter and Vivienne; daughter Adrienne Dennis, son-in-law Kevin Dennis; sister Pat Stefanchuk (Wally, Mark [Mary], and Lynne); brother Dave (Bettie, Shawna Lang [Kyle, Nolan, Avery], Leah Kimura [Kevin, Gwyneth, Clayton]); sister Jean (Laura Magnusson, Erik Magnusson [Maria, Freya]); brother Dennis (Andrew, Chris, Ben, Callie, Cam), and sister-in-law Helene Merrell. On Maxine's side, Scott will be missed by the Walker family, including niece Tracy Kane (John, Rachel), nephew Dean Lanuke, niece Shelley Graham, niece Marsha Stanley (Dave, Travis, Tylla), nephew Tommy Walker (Karyn, Brady), niece Sharlene (Tamara) and nephew Billy Graham (Lusan, Jessica).
Scott was born and raised in Flin Flon, MB, where he graduated from Hapnot Collegiate. Scott then moved to Winnipeg and obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Manitoba majoring in Economics and English. Following graduation, he qualified as a Chartered Accountant, which served him well throughout his career, in Winnipeg, Nassau (Bahamas), Flin Flon, Saskatoon, and back to Winnipeg, where he retired in 2018 after 20 plus years as COO and CFO of Western Glove Works/Silver Jeans. Scott had a very strong work ethic and he took great pride in his work, but his first priority was always his family. Scott loved many things and could be found reading the newspaper or a good book, but most likely you would find him playing golf or watching any sporting event on TV with his wife by his side. He loved sports and thoroughly enjoyed staying updated on his grandson's golf and baseball achievements, as well as his granddaughter's dance and other activities. Additionally, Scott loved music and the arts and loved musical theatre. He especially loved watching his daughter Adrienne (and her husband Kevin) perform on stage, as professional actors.
Another defining moment in Scott's life was his double lung transplant. After a long battle with sarcoidosis, Scott needed a double lung transplant and received the gift of life from his donor in August 2007. Scott and his family are eternally grateful to his donor and his donor's family, which allowed Scott the opportunity of 15 plus years, post-transplant. During this time, he watched his daughter get married, became a grandfather, celebrated 50 plus years of marriage to his beloved wife, and more.
In lieu of flowers, please consider becoming an organ donor. Sign your donor cards and let your family know you want to be a donor. Also, donations can be made to Canadian Transplant Association, in Scott's memory, at www.canadiantransplant.com/donate

  • So sorry to hear about Scott's passing. I really enjoyed the time I worked in the same office. He was always pleasant and straight in his dealings. Perhaps, the following explains the regard I had for him. When Scott ran for Flin Flon provincial seat as a PC. He had my vote and I tried to persuade other people to vote for him as well. It is the only time I ever voted for someone running on a conservative platform. Best wishes to you all and remember the good memories. - Posted by: Buz Trevor (Friend) on: Jun 04, 2022
