Offer Condolences or Memory THE REVEREND GEORGE CAMERON MCMILLAN
March 20, 1932 - June 9, 2022
The Rev. George Cameron McMillan has entered the eternal existence that God has prepared for us all, peacefully and surrounded by family.
A devoted husband, a patient and loving father, a servant of God, a traveller, historian, and organizer of facts and figures, Cam won you as a friend with his gentleness and ability to listen, but he kept you with his intelligence and devotion. He was a Manitoba boy, born and raised in Winnipeg, graduating with an M.A from the University of Manitoba. Cam then accepted a position with the federal government in Ottawa, and later felt the call to the Christian ministry.
Cam's quiet life as an Ottawa bachelor was rocked on a Wednesday evening in September 1960, when a smart redhead showed up at Dominion United Church Young People's Group. They remained in touch while the young theologian became a top scholar at Queen's University. Within a few years, Cam was ordained, he and Barbara Ann Barton were wed, and they set off for a life of adventure together in Ogema, Saskatchewan.
Cam took a hiatus to pursue a scholarship he'd won to Yale University, and then the family resumed their rural road trip with parishes in Carstairs, Alberta; Souris, Manitoba; Hillston, New South Wales; and then Cumberland, Harriston, and Brussels, Ontario.
The family lived a life of love and exploration seasoned with a pinch of chaos. Cam was a caring father to Trish, Bob (Anna Dow), Kathy (Aaron Poupard), and Susan (Peter Campbell), and in time became a doting Papa to grandchildren, Noah, Gabrielle, Megan and Islay. We all loved him very much. No dark and wintry hockey practice was ever too early for him; he always had our backs.
Cam was a true friend and "doer of the Word," possessing great intelligence and empathy. He prided himself on his tenacity, his attention to detail and his ability to follow through on anything, no matter the challenge. Cam loved Chopin and swimming the backstroke and Scottish folk songs and Get Smart. He was not above presiding over the occasional backyard pet funeral.
