MARY PRALL
(KARST)

March 31, 1923 - May 24, 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Prall on May 24, 2022. Mary died peacefully at West Park Manor Personal Care Home with her family at her side. She was just shy of 100 years of age.
Mary leaves to mourn her children, Rose Marie (Larry), Winnipeg, MB, Eric (Cathy), Whistler, BC and John (Liz), Winnipeg, MB; and grandchildren, Deiter (Whistler), Hunter (Vancouver), Stephen (Winnipeg) and Mina (Winnipeg). Mary was predeceased by her husband, John Prall, in 1993.
Mary was born in Oberneudorf, Romania in the Carpathia mountains. Mary and John knew each other well in their community but were separated when John was called to fight in the Second World War. Mary and all her family were forced to leave Romania and travel on foot and wagon train to Germany. After the war, they reconnected in their family's small village in Germany where they married and immigrated to Canada in 1952. Mary and John travelled overseas by boat to Montreal where they were told Winnipeg had employment opportunities. They proceeded to Winnipeg where they settled and started their wonderful life together.
Mary was a very special lady. Her heart was full of kindness and compassion for others. Mary cared deeply for her friends and family. She was a wonderful listener and always found time to help anyone in need. The kitchen in the Prall household was very busy, Mary would always be making lunches and dinners for friends and family. Of course, she would be the last to eat just to make sure everyone else had enough on their plates.
Mary spent many years driving her kids to water ski tournaments and snow ski races across Canada. Mary decided to take up snow skiing in her early 50s and enjoyed many trips in Canada and Europe with John until he passed in 1993. Mary loved the outdoors and enjoyed hiking, mushroom picking and swimming. The Prall cottage at Falcon Lake held a special place in Mary's heart. She spent a great deal of time at the lake enjoying the outdoors. Mary also loved animals and enjoyed the family dogs over her lifetime.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at West Park Manor. We cannot thank them enough for their tremendous support, care and compassion.
A celebration of Mary's life will be held at a later date.
Should you wish, donations in her name can be made to: West Park Manor, 3199 Grant Avenue, Winnipeg, R3R 1X2.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • I remember your mother well from many years ago as do my sisters and brothers. Remember your neighbors, the Caron family…. Lucie remembers your mother’s German pancakes that she often shared with Eric and John. I remember your mother showing my mother how to make her fresh bean and bacon soup. I make it always with my first crop of beans from the garden. I also remember how are mothers would spend an hour in the afternoon coming to see our “concerts” in one of your sheds across the ditch bridge, lol. Many memories! Our condolences to your family from all of us. - Posted by: Louise Gogal (Childhood friend of Rose Marie) on: Jul 01, 2022

  • Our Sincerest Sympathies From our Family to yours. Where to start. I always called Mrs. Prall - "Mommy Prall" as she was always there for a kind word and a great meal, whether at the house or on a beach at water ski tournaments. The memories of "Mommy Prall" will always live on in my mind. She raised a Great Family. - Posted by: Don Shearer (Family Friend ) on: Jun 27, 2022

  • Mrs. Prall was a very kind and lovely woman. I had the opportunity to know her through her daughter, Rose, when we met in high school and found out that we were neighbours at Falcon Lake. Our families became close and I have wonderful memories of our times together. There was no one quite like Mary Prall and I treasure her memory. She was superwoman in every way. Sending my deepest condolences to all of Mrs. Prall’s family. - Posted by: Roxanne Sigmar (Friend ) on: Jun 26, 2022

  • My sincerest sympathies to Rose Marie and all the Prall families. I had the pleasure of helping Mary in the capacity of HCA with CBI Health. She quickly became a special friend more than a client and we enjoyed our visits even more. Mary had a beautiful heart and soul that I was very blessed to get to know. • I remember Mrs. Prall! Always with a smile and waving as she drove by. Devoted to her family. She was tiny but a force that is for sure. What an amazing woman! Our thoughts are with you and our deepest condolences to Rose Marie, Eric and John and your families from Sidney and Donna Macaw. - Posted by: Sidney Macaw (family friend) on: Jun 25, 2022

  • Rose, I was saddened to read about the loss of your mom. Even though we had only known her for a short time, we enjoyed our visits with her as we walked down the halls of West Park Manor stopping in for a chat. Mary would stop by my moms table in the dinning room and say hello to her on her way back to her room. Her eyes always lit up when we ran into her, she will be missed so much. - Posted by: Marlaine Marshall (Friend from West Park Manor) on: Jun 25, 2022
