DIANNA STEWART
(nee JANIK)

January 5, 1942 – June 15, 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Diane (Di) at the age of 80.
She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Hugh Howard, sons, Hugh Richard (Felicia) and Grant (Reese), her granddaughter Yael, her sister Carole Brown, her brother Bill and her sister-in-law Linda Villeneuve.
Diane was predeceased by her mother Sophie and brother Bob (Joanne).
A warm weather lover, Diane met her future husband Howie during one of the many weekends she spent at Grand Beach with friends in her youth. Their mutual love of the lake continued in the family-built cabin at Albert Beach where she was known for feeding everything from the smallest hummingbird to the local deer population. A great lover of animals she looked forward to regular visits from her woodland friends. She also enjoyed hosting countless wienie roasts under the stars with the Browns, where the "light snacks" turned into full-on buffets over the years.
Diane spent some time at Pirjo-Liisa during her working years. She also volunteered for the hockey teams her sons were involved with. Her wildly successful fundraising campaigns while treasurer of the Transcona "Regents" may have raised a few questions, but was a result of hard work, not creative bookkeeping.
While air travel was not high on Diane's list, she loved family road trips exploring Canada from coast to coast, as well the northern US. In retirement, Diane and Howard enjoyed escaping the Winnipeg winters by heading south to Harlingen, TX where, over their 22 years as snowbirds, they developed close friendships with many people across the continent. A modest and avid cook, she enjoyed the Texas community potluck gatherings where she was able to showcase her family recipes. She remained active into her 70s, frequently hitting the links with family as well as her regular group of golf buddies. She also maintained a busy social life, attending monthly family breakfasts as well as lunches with her "Y & R" group.
The family would like to thank all the staff at St. Boniface Hospital for the compassion and care that they showed Diane.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Wildlife Federation or a charity of choice.
A celebration of Diane's life will be held at a later date.

  • I am so sad to have lost my old and very dear friend, Diane. We go back 63 years to those memorable days at Grand Beach to our annual celebration of the guys' birthdays in June of every year! Although Di struggled with her health in the last few years, she always had a smile and a kind of an “oh well” attitude. We didn’t see each other often but we both knew we had each other’s back, if ever needed. So Diane, “Goodbyes are not forever, goodbyes are not the end. They simply mean I’ll miss you, until we meet again”. To Howie and the rest of the family, my deepest condolences! - Posted by: Judy Hall (Old friend) on: Jun 25, 2022
