MARY ELIZABETH HOUSTON
(nee Hodgson)

It is with great sadness that we announce that Mary passed away peacefully, on June 12, 2022 after a brief illness.
Mary is lovingly remembered by her sister, Merle Oddson of Thornhill, Ontario and her brother Tom (Dianne) of Winnipeg, her three nephews and their families: Blair Oddson (Melanie) of Toronto, Bruce Oddson (Josee) of Sudbury and Andrew (Stephanie) of Winnipeg, her great-nieces and nephews:
Quinn and Hazel Oddson, Simon and Sophie Oddson, Nora and Grace Hodgson. She is also survived by her cousin Jack Fleming and his family of Lethbridge.
She was predeceased by her parents, George and Lucy Hodgson, her brother in-law Bob Oddson, her cousin and lifetime friend Judith Skene.
Mary was born in Regina, Sask. July 17, 1944. Shortly after, the family moved to Winnipeg where she lived most of her life.
She taught elementary school for a few years, but left the profession to become a full-time step mother. When she returned to the work force, her love of travel became her new passion. As a travel consultant for Fort Richmond Travel, she had many loyal clients and she enjoyed the opportunities to travel herself to many places throughout the world. Every trip was a learning experience for her and she loved to tell stories of her adventures.
While she loved to travel, her favourite place and refuge was the family cottage at Minaki.
Sadly, she had to retire early as she developed major health issues, but no matter what challenges life threw at her, Mary persevered with strength and determination. She valued her many friendships, whether old lifelong ones or new acquaintances. She was so grateful for the care and support they provided her as she fought through her health issues.
We shall miss her kindness, generosity, supportive nature and her laugh. We will treasure the memory of our sister, aunt, and dear friend.
If friends so desire, donations in Mary's name can be made to the Canadian Liver Foundation (Manitoba).
At Mary's request, no formal service will be held. Friends are invited to honour her memory at a gathering on July 11, 2022.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I first met Mary when I was just starting out in travel and did a work placement at Fort Richmond Travel. Several years later My mother Lillian, and Mary became friends. Mary was a good friend to my Mom and that is something I will cherish. My condolences to Mary's family. Lisa Ito - Posted by: Lisa Ito (Friend) on: Jul 24, 2022

  • Mary and I met in Junior High School. She soon became one of my best friends. We hung out together all through school and my family home became the meeting place because it was the most central for our other girlfriends. My mom Marg Moore welcomed them all (she knew where her kid was). When Mary became a travel agent, we travelled to French Polynesia together and she also recommended my vacation to Costa Rica in 1991 long before it became a tourist destination. In 2002 we were invited to our friend Leigh’s daughter’s wedding in Arizona so once again we paired up for travel. We also visited Mary’s cousin Judy while we were there. Of course we had many other good times together over the years and have always kept in touch. Sometimes our phone chats lasted an hour, just like when we were teenagers! I will miss you Mary ~ Pam (Moore) Whitehead - Posted by: Pam Whitehead (Friends for 65 years) on: Jul 06, 2022

  • My deepest condolences to the Hodgson family (Tom, Diane, Merle). Mary was a dear friend of my late wife Leigh Hilton (Black) and I. Mary and Leigh were first childhood friends and then best friends the rest of their lives Mary was one of Leigh's bridesmaids at our wedding. We had many enjoyable summers together at Minaki and the Hodgson cottage there. I am sure Mary and Leigh will connect up in heaven and renew their deep, loving friendship. • Mary was a very cherished friend. We met here at our condo years ago and shared many wonderful moments. She honoured us with her presence at our 60th anniversary celebration. Mary was a great mentor to many serving for numerous years as President of our condo Board. Her advice and knowledge on condo matters were second to none. I will miss our lively discussions on so many matters but will miss most her laughter. May you be with the angels now out of pain dearest friend. When I join you we can continue our conversations. So happy I got to talk to you and share some laughter that last Saturday and that I was able to say I love you for that last time.
