ERNEST (ERNIE) MATTHEW HASIUK
1939 – 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ernie after a brief illness.
He is survived by his loving wife Pat (nee Bozohora), son Greg (Paula), daughter Brenda (Duncan), and grandchildren, Jaime, Magnus, Sebastian, and Katya, as well as brother-in-law Larry (Rita), niece Summer, grandniece Oriya, nephew Todd (Bawanthi), and a large extended family of cousins.
Born to Roy Hasiuk and Helen Hryciuk in Mears, MB, Ernie moved to Rossburn and then Winnipeg when he was 12. Graduating with a Masters degree in Social Work from the University of Manitoba, he began his career with the Department of Family Services, holding positions of Director of Child Welfare and Director of Vocational and Rehabilitation Services until his retirement after 37 years with the Province.
Ernie was a devoted husband and father. Married happily to Pat for 57 years, he was a true, loving partner and raised their two children to cherish the love and support of a close-knit family.
Ernie was a man of many talents - handyman, gardener, and builder - and had a wide circle of good friends. He planned many road trips, starting out with a small pop-up tent trailer, upgrading to a fifth wheel, and eventually owning a cottage at Clear Lake. He loved golfing - especially with the "Rusty Zippers" - music, concerts, and the theatre. He loved to travel and learn about other cultures. He and Pat made many wonderful memories on their travels to over 20 countries and winters in Mesa, AZ.
After an accident in 2011 left Ernie a quadriplegic, the family rallied and supported each other through this profoundly tough time. Ernie and Pat adapted their lifestyle and stayed strong. Despite everything, he continued to enjoy life: celebrating every family occasion, sharing time with good friends, and faithfully attending his grandchildren's many activities.
Watching his four grandchildren grow into young adults gave Ernie great joy -- he took such pride in each of their individual talents. His children and grandchildren were blessed with an amazing role model - someone who exuded kindness, courage, and unconditional love not just through what he said, but how he lived each and every day.
Ernie was often the guy people relied on - our rock. An empathetic and compassionate man, Ernie embodied integrity and was an inspiration to all who knew him.
We know he would have liked to express his heartfelt gratitude to Manitoba's public home care system, and especially his regular home care aides, Alfredo, Ryan, Kim, and Nick. Their dedicated care enabled Ernie to live independently with Pat at his side. The family would also like to thank the ICU staff at Grace Hospital for their attentive care and support.
A celebration of Ernie's life will be held on Tuesday, June 28, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Ernie's name to Spinal Cord Injury MB or Manitoba Possible.

  • We extend our sincere condolences to you, Pat, and to Greg, Brenda and family in Ernie's passing. Ernie was a great guy and was always fun to be with. His competitive spirit and his fondness for golf was always evident when golfing with the "Breezy Bend Crew" many years ago! • Brenda and family, It is obvious to see that your parents have instilled strong values in you: compassion, conviction and loyalty. These traits align with the way you have described that your dad has lived his life. When looking at the actions of you, your family and your mother, your dad is with you all, always. May these traits continue you to guide you, and provide strength as you deal with his passing. We are so sorry for your loss. • So sad to hear the tragic news. Ernie was a true inspiration to all who met him. As a loving, doting father and husband, or a friend who saw him casually, he always had a soothing, rock solid comment of encouragement. A truly gracious man. Condolences to Pat, Greg and Brenda and families. - Posted by: wayne and mary caplette (cousin) on: Jun 25, 2022

  • Dear Pat and family, please accept my deepest sympathy in the loss of your loving husband, father, and grandfather. It broke my heart to see his obit today. I have fond memories of sitting beside him for all Bomber home games and the fun we shared at those games. His strong sense of family loyalty was ever present and has been passed down to his children and grandchildren. May you rest in peace Ernie. You will be missed by all who knew you and loved you. - Posted by: Dianne Kennedy (friend) on: Jun 25, 2022
