LEONA JEAN LOEWEN
April 28, 1961 June 21, 2022
Leona, affectionately known as Oni, passed away peacefully in St. Boniface Hospital on June 21 with a sister and brother at her bedside.
Leona, daughter of George and Herta Loewen, was born and raised with her two sisters, Evelyn, Ruth Sherwood and brother George Jr. in Abbotsford, BC.
After high school she moved to Winnipeg to pursue higher education, graduating from CMU (MBBC) and University of Manitoba and then launching a career in Early Childhood Education that spanned four decades. While close contact remained with her immediate family in BC, Leona's prairie "families of the heart" included the Care-a-Lot Daycare Centre, Elmwood Church friends, and the Dunrobin Avenue neighbourhood. In these spheres of relationships "Oni" was beloved and blessed. She was appreciated as a reliable, hard worker, generous and compassionate to friends and strangers alike, a kind, courageous woman.
Leona enjoyed being an aunt to Jillian and Meredith, never ignoring an opportunity to spoil her nieces! Advent / Christmas and summer vacations with them on Gabriola Island, BC are precious family traditions and we will especially miss Leona's presence there. Leona's life with us was resolutely heaven-bent; she generously gave of her time and talents for the benefit of others and to the glory of God.
The family wishes to convey our heartfelt thanks to the individuals at St. Boniface Hospital Ward 5B who compassionately attended to her medical needs and personal care.
A memorial service will be held July 9, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. Central Time in Abbotsford, BC.

I hope this reaches you Evy and Ruth! I was just looking at our 1980 MBBC yearbook and tried to find out where you were all at and shocked to discover Oni's passing. I remember with just so much fondness our time there. I live in Guelph, Ontario where Beth Goobie was from. Gerry Dyck I discovered may be a spits throw from me [His wife Evelyn passed away a dozen years ago from cancer unfortunately]. I am married with 4 sons, am a United Church minister and now officially old ! Her picture, was instantly recognizable. She hardly looks like she aged at all. I just loved her and appreciated your family in my life there. I miss all my MBBC friends. It was a wonderful time in my life. I hope you have all had rich and faith filled lives. I would so love to hear from you. I am so sorry for your loss, especially losing your dad so close to Oni's passing. I hope we meet up in heaven and have long chats ! My thoughts are with you both. Our family is deeply saddened by the passing of Oni. Our condolences go out to the family. Oni was my sister Darlene's partner in the operation of their beloved Care A Lot Daycare. When Darlene passed last year, we were so fortunate to know that Oni would care on. Darlene always spoke highly of Oni, and was very grateful to have such a trusting, caring person by her side. I had an opportunity to spend some time with Oni at Darlene's service where I learned how sweet of a soul Oni really was. She was one of a kind and will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate to know her. RIP beautiful lady. - Posted by: Sandy Kupchak (Friend) on: Jul 11, 2022
