MARION SHORTREED PATRICK
(nee BLACK)
August 21, 1934 - July 4, 2022
Marion, beloved wife of Bob, has passed away peacefully, at home, after an extended period of battling dementia.
Along with her husband Bob, Marion leaves behind daughters, Heather (Roger Burns), Adrienne (Warren Rumpel) and son Bob Jr. She was predeceased by her daughter Rebecca, her parents, John and Alice Black, and her brothers, Jack and Perry.
Marion was born and raised in Fergus, Ontario. After completing high school, she pursued a career as a nurse, graduating from the Guelph General Hospital as an RN in 1955. While working in Galt, Ontario, she and a nursing friend took a trip to Ottawa where she met her partner for life Bob. They met on Mother's Day weekend in 1959 and were engaged in November. They were married on August 13, 1960, cementing a loving relationship which has lasted for 62 years. As Bob was a pilot in the R.C.A.F., Marion was quickly initiated into being a serviceman's wife with frequent moves throughout Canada, Germany and the United States. She faced each move and challenge with enthusiasm and wonder, living life to the fullest at each posting location. She gave birth to three beautiful daughters and a very special son. She nurtured each to become wonderful adults and her daughters then gifted her with 14 beautiful grandchildren to love as a doting grandmother; moreover, those grandchildren have since added 14 great-grandchildren to bring her great joy. With the birth of her son, Bob Jr., who was born with Down Syndrome, she became a strong advocate for inclusion of children with special needs in education and in the workplace. At the time, she faced a lot of push back in society but it did not deter her as she constantly pursued equality for all at each new posting location in the firm belief that education and stimulation at the earliest age are necessary for success. Marion loved to entertain her friends and family. She was a superb hostess, always enjoying serving firstclass meals using her finest china and silverware. Her table was always immaculately set and her cooking and baking were absolutely delicious.
Cremation has taken place and her ashes will be interred in the family plot at Belsyde Cemetery, Fergus, Ontario.
In lieu of flowers, if you wish to make a donation in remembrance of Marion, please donate to The Canadian Down Syndrome Society.

"Marnie" as I always knew her, and I were closest friends all through public and high school in Fergus. The Black family lived up the hill behind us, we always met and walked to school together. She was a bridesmaid for Bill and I when we got married in 1958 and I was a bridesmaid for she and Bob when they got married. When Bill and I were in Winnipeg to visit my sister and brother-in-law, Marion and Bob had us for a visit and dinner at their home. What a lovely memory I have of that visit. Thinking of you, Bob, at this time, you were a wonderful care giver of Marian during her illness. I have many happy memories of our growing up together. Bob, Heather, Adrienne and Bob Jr. - we are so saddened to hear of Marion’s passing. Marion was such a beautiful lady in every way. Her smile was angelic and she smiled often. Remembering our times together in Germany and in Greenwood. We are thinking of the family and sending our condolences. Bernice and Bill. - Posted by: Bernice and Bill Naylor (Friends) on: Jul 11, 2022
