ALLAN (AL) GREENBERG
Allan (Al) Greenberg passed away peacefully on the afternoon of July 6, 2022, at the age of 97, at Concordia Hospital in his home town of Winnipeg, Manitoba. He experienced numerous medical conditions in recent months and demonstrated his courage and love for life as he battled these conditions like a true champ. He always had a smile on his face and kind words for those who came to visit and care for him.
Al was born on January 13, 1925, in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Jack and Sally Greenberg. After completing high school at St. Johns, Al Joined the Royal Canadian Navy where he fought for his country during the Second World War.
After completing his service Al was an international boxing promotor, and successful businessman. In 1973, he married Noreen Smith and together they raised one son, Ian. Al and Noreen enjoyed travelling, and had many memorable vacations to Hawaii, Palm Springs, Las Vegas, and Mexico. He was an avid sports enthusiast and loved them all. He was at a Jets game as recently as this March. Playing sports in his younger years helped hone the man he became, fiercely competitive on the field and a true gentleman with a heart of gold off the field.
He enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in sports and was a fixture at these games for almost 40 years. The grandkids were always met after each game with encouraging words, helpful feedback and of course a chocolate bar or Powerade.
Al was preceded in death by his father Jack, mother Sally, and brother Morton. He is survived by his wife Noreen, son and daughter-in-law, Ian, and Teresa, grandchildren, Bryan (Robyn), Tyson (Jasmine), John (Kendra), nieces, Harriet (Hamid), Pam (George), and nephew Jack (Hanneke) Greenberg. Also, the loves of his life, his seven great-grandchildren, Logan, Taylor, Sophia, Blake, Xavier, Arabella, and Maverick.
Thanks to the doctors, nurses, and all the staff at Concordia Hospital for their care given so graciously to our Al during the past five weeks.
Honouring Allan's wishes, there will be no public service.

My Deepest Sympathies to Al's he will be greatly missed. I met Al when he was 40 and he was going to Vegas to see Frank Sinatra He was a confirmed bachelor always with the boys, no girls. Several years later when I got to know Noreen, I thought she should meet Al. They were a match made in heaven. Two thoughtful, kind, generous, wonderful people who should be together and they were a perfect match. I heard after they were married someone asked Al after he had been married awhile how it was after he had been a bachelor for so long and he said the jury was still out. He had such a great sense of humour because I know for a fact he was the happiest man alive. Al had a loving wife and son. What more could he wish and he had a long and happy life with grandchildren and great-children to follow. I'm very blessed to have known such a genuinely good person. Rest in peace dear friend. love Helene. - Posted by: Helene Blank (Friend) on: Jul 15, 2022

My condolences to Noreen on the loss of your beloved Al. I had the pleasure of knowing Al almost two decades thru our morning coffee gatherings. We found out that we had a lot in common, born and grew up in the area, went to the same high school and played football for the high school, except that Al won a city championship. We worked in retail grocery business, but different companies and at one time, just down the street from each other. When I talked about the kids I went to school with, Al talked about their parents he went to school with. When St. John's had their 100th anniversary, Al and I went together to take in all the festivities. Al would go each Monday morning to the retirement home and visit one of the retirees there. She would give him the past week's Globe and Mail papers and the Jewish Post. Al would read them and bring them to us on Saturday. I would read the G & M and Herbie the Jewish Post. When I finished the G & M, I would give it to Herbie. Thank you Al for this service over so many years. I looked forward to our coffee time together each morning. I have so many fond memories as Al was such a great person. God Bless, Rest in Peace. - Posted by: colin dederick (friend) on: Jul 09, 2022
