GEORGE HOLLO

George Hollo, age 74, passed away peacefully at the Health Sciences Centre on June 22, 2022, in the loving embrace of his wife Evelyn Boyko, ending a valiant five year battle with acute myeloid leukemia.
In addition to Evelyn, George will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by nephews, Steven Calderon (Donna), Michael Wilson and Colin Kapilik, brother-in-law John Kisil, family friends, Sylvia Rauch and the Egrenyi family, as well as many friends, neighbours, colleagues and clients. He was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Eva Hollo and sister Karen.
Born in Austria, George came to Canada as an infant with his parents who sought a better life following the Second World War. He had a happy childhood and teen years, making some lifelong friendships.
Following a brief time owning and operating a wholesale bakery, George's career path took him to the financial world, where he worked as an investment advisor for over 35 years, ending his career at PI Financial Corp. He earned the respect of his colleagues, trust and loyalty of his clients, many of whom he was proud to call friends.
George and Evelyn met through mutual friends (the successful "Blind Date Club") and married in 1989, settling in North Kildonan. George enjoyed helping others and although not handy himself, could usually refer you to someone who was. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed bowling on several leagues. As a member of the AMC Car Club, he was proud to showcase his prized '67 Marlin. George volunteered his time for many years to the former Society for Manitobans with Disabilities. Over the years, he lovingly cared for many furry friends who deeply enriched his life, including Remy, Biscuit, Terry and Jersey. George and Evelyn enjoyed frequent trips to Arizona and most notably, an adventurous trip to India in 2016.
A quiet man by nature, George had a mischievous side to those who knew him well. He was a kind man, a gentleman, the eternal optimist and our energizer bunny. He was non-judgmental and never spoke poorly of anyone. In his final years, George faced many health challenges with courage and stoicism. He accepted the things he could not change, never complained and exemplified the Inuit concept ajuinnata, "never give up".
Evelyn would like to thank Dr. C. Speziali, nurse Lisa King and the entire BMT team and CCMB treatment room staff; Doctors R. Johnson, J. Saranchuk, and P. Daeninck as well as WRHA Palliative Care for their exemplary care of George. Special thanks to Kevin of Niagara Falls, whose stem cell donation gave George many more tomorrows. Heartfelt gratitude to numerous friends and neighbours who have reached out at this difficult time.
Cremation has taken place and at George's request, there will be no service.
Flowers gratefully declined. In George's memory, if able, please consider giving the Gift of Life by being a blood, organ or stem cell donor. Memorial donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation or the Winnipeg Humane Society.
