• Today, July, 23, 2022, John Daly’s life is celebrated in Winnipeg. Although we are far away today, the memories of him and our friendship are so close. John and I were colleagues at a unique project in Manitoba: the Canada Land Inventory, providing multidisciplinary resource information to support regional land use planning. I have a copy of his 1970 report on “Feasibility on Resource Data Systems” in front of me, it turned out to be one of the first comprehensive studies on the requirements and use of Geographic Information Systems in Manitoba. But we were much more than colleagues. John and Norma adopted us, newcomers to Canada, as family and made us feel at home, welcoming, open minded, intelligent, enthusiastic, creative and with very strong social awareness. • My condolences to the Daly family on the loss of John. I have fond memories of our family visits in the 1950s when we would end with singing around the piano.
