ALLAN WALDER

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Allan Walder at the age of 104 on July 13, 2022 at the Simkin Centre.
Allan is survived by his daughter Sharon Walder (Lorne Pollock) and his son-in-law Lorne Billinkoff, his grandchildren, Mitch Billinkoff and Alix (Natan) Cramer; Lorne Pollock's children, Kara and Megan (Thomas) and his great-grandchildren, Shalev, Boaz and Nava. Allan was a loving uncle and great-uncle to his many nieces and nephews. He was especially close to Andrea (Terry) and Joel (Kelsey). He was predeceased by his devoted wife Bernice Walder and his daughter Marilyn Billinkoff, as well as his beloved parents, Isaac and Channa Walder, sister Sadie (Charlie) Koplovich and brother David Walder. He was also predeceased by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Bess and Martin Greenberg, with whom he spent many happy times.
Allan grew up in Winnipeg's North End; after high school he attended the University of Manitoba College of Pharmacy. After graduating, he was drafted and spent four years in the medical corps of the Canadian Army, stationed in Canada and then at a hospital in post-war Germany. Upon his return from Europe he purchased his drugstore, Portage Drugs Limited, located in St. James. It was around this time that he met Bernice Zipursky at a dance; they were happily married until Bernice's passing. After Allan sold Portage Drugs he had a long career with Shoppers Drug Mart until finally retiring when he was in his early 70s.
Allan was a very hard worker and a very devoted family man. He was an avid golfer; he was still golfing into his early 90s. He loved to travel and he and Bernice enjoyed many vacations together, first in Maui and later on in Palm Springs, often with their close group of friends. Allan lived a long, full and happy life, and he will be greatly missed by his family, both near and far. He was one of a kind.
The family would like to thank the compassionate staff at the Simkin 1 unit and his companions, Shella, Aida and Leena for their loving care and devotion to Allan. They really made a difference in his quality of life, especially after the deaths of Bernice and Marilyn.
Allan's funeral was held graveside at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery on Sunday, July 17, 2022.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Allan's name can be made to the Saul and Claribel Simkin Centre, or the charity of your choice.
