EDIE (EDITH CHARLOTTE) MORGAN
1930 - 2021
Mom grew up in the Interlake, moved to Winnipeg as a teen, and met her life-love Ernie Morgan at the roller rink. They celebrated 49 years of marriage before Dad passed in 2000. Mom said that her greatest accomplishment was raising four kids, but she did so much more.
Mom had a heart that was big enough to include everyone. She was always thinking of others and exemplified unconditional love. She cared for her own mother, then her stepfather. Mom took special interest in her nieces and nephews. Many people called her Mom, and she in turn loved them like her kids - Nellie and Kim in particular.
Her laughter was infectious; she was playful and fun. Always game, she'd be first in line to sell at a craft table, buy school chocolates, host a family dinner, dress up for a Hallowe'en party, take the kids to breakfast with Santa, and bring two pies to a dinner. Bowling was a favourite hobby; she won trophies and made close friendships. An ardent Winnipeg Free Press supporter, she subscribed as a teen with her first pay cheque. She won the Jumble dozens of times, often entering in family names instead of her own. She aced the puzzles - a feat because she spoke only Swedish until starting school. She knitted and embroidered gifts that we still treasure. Many times, she called Bingo! at Brooklands Community Club.
As we grew, Mom returned to work in the 1960s at Clark's, eventually retiring from Gambles. She hated thieves because Mom believed strongly in honesty. A hard worker, she was a valued colleague and friend in the shoe department.
Vacations were most often at the beach. A reluctant traveller, a life highlight was a trip shared with her sister and best friend Grace - to Sweden and their mother's birthplace, meeting relatives along the way. She loved attending niece Brenda's annual Swedish Christmas celebration.
Mom and Dad lived in Willow Park Housing Co-op for 40 plus years, making many friends. Neighbours admired Dad's gardening, and she honoured him by continuing after he passed. That diverse community felt like home to Mom more than any other place they had lived.
Her last 10 months were spent with Geri and Bill in East Selkirk, enjoying the daily parade of birds to the feeders, naming trees in the distance, and having visitors as the pandemic allowed. Palliative and home care brought comfort and ease in those last months; she spent less than a day in the hospital at the end. We miss her greatly.
Graveside interment service at 11:00 a.m. on July 29 at Glen Lawn Cemetery, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. in Winnipeg (no reception is planned).
