With great sadness we announce the passing of Paul Tackaberry from complications of ALS. Paul leaves his wife, Sarah Giddens, and their daughter, Leah Yuanyuan Tackaberry Giddens.
Predeceased by his parents, Nina Butler and Edwin Tackaberry, Paul will be much missed by his sisters, Laurie Lipinski, Nancy Tackaberry and Lisa Carriere (Jeff). He is fondly remembered by many nephews and nieces.
Paul grew up in Winnipeg and studied music at Brandon University. He earned his LLB from the University of Manitoba in 1985. He was called to the Manitoba Bar then obtained his LLM in 1987 on a scholarship to Columbia University.
Paul practiced law in Toronto with several major firms in the area of intellectual property, most recently as counsel at Ridout and Maybee. He taught IP law at universities in Toronto, Montreal and Hong Kong, and served on the editorial board of the Trade Mark Reporter and the International Trademark Association.
Paul was an accomplished musician, playing alto sax, clarinet and piano. On YouTube he produced multiple "Saxman Tack" videos during the lockdown to entertain friends and family. He was an avid cyclist, gifted meditator and lover of the outdoors. Paul was known for his humility, kindness, and irreverence. He had a naughty sense of humour and loved making others laugh.
Paul faced the devastating impacts of ALS with calm and courage, supported by tireless, loving care from Sarah and Leah, with assistance from a wider circle including Sarah's siblings Elizabeth, Ben and David, and nephew Ted Rawson.
Paul's greatest joy was being with Sarah and Leah camping, travelling with the Connell Hills, making music, cycling and playing games at home. He was loved, and will be missed by many.
A memorial event will be held at a later date. To honour Paul's memory, donations to the Nature Conservancy of Canada would be appreciated.

I first met Paul in July 1987 when I started my articles at Lang Michener in Toronto. I last saw Paul in November 2021 when he was passing through Winnipeg. We were friends for 34 years. I remember Paul’s soft spoken demeanour, engaging him in lengthy intellectual discussions (where I often felt over matched), his beloved saxophone, eating too many schnitzels on a bun with him at the food court, his moral outrage at perceived social injustices, his love of writing, his meandering stories and the sharing of many adventures with him. I remember the time he intentionally smeared mustard all over my brand new Hugo Boss suit at the end of a night out on the town. And I remember how mortified he was when I reminded him the next day of what transpired the night before. I remember the shock and the dismay and the abject grief when I heard of his passing. But what I remember most was a kind and generous soul who was always positive and was a good and loyal friend. Whenever we got together after long spells of separation, it was always like old times within five minutes of reacquaintance – a true measure of friendship. I will miss Paul very much. I was shocked and saddened to hear of Paul's passing. Our paths crossed 30 years ago at Lang Michener in Toronto. I was an articling student and Paul was a young lawyer. He sure stood out from the corporate crowd! A fun, talented and unique individual. I left Toronto and the law but kept track of Paul's career through mutual friends. Always hoped to see him again. My heartfelt sympathy to Paul’s family. I remember student teaching Paul when he was in grade 12. You could tell that he was going to be a great musician. I spent 2 years at Brandon University with Paul and then 2 years in the sax section with him in The Ron Paley University of Manitoba Jazz Band. Paul was always a pleasure to work with.
