JOHN (JACK) LONGDEN WRIGHT

Was born September 15, 1922 and died August 3, 2022, just 43 days short of 100 years old!
His passing was peaceful, surrounded by his two loving sons and their wives. He was predeceased by his parents, Joe and Rachel Wright, his wife Beverly nee Johnson, daughter Rachel (Rae) Margolis and son Craig.
He is survived by sons Lionel (Brenda), Jack (Marta), son-in-law Gary, grand-children Cheney, Jonathan, Tara, Lara, Rory and six great-grandchildren.
Jack was born, raised and lived most of his life in Transcona. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1939 to 1945. Upon return he joined the CNR until retiring in 1977 at age 55. He was then able to pursue his passion for golf and his second career began, building and repairing golf clubs, taking early retirement at age 85 at Bev's insistence! They enjoyed years of travel and golf together. Jack drove until age of 92! The family greatly appreciates the care and kindness of the Golden West Centennial Lodge where he spent his later years.
The family will hold a small private service.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Very sorry for you loss. I remember Jack well for the times he often spent entertaining us as kids. He would often throw the baseball or football around with us. He also gave me my first bike to ride. When I went to see him in later years to repair my golf clubs he would also give me some golf lessons after just looking at the sole of my clubs. He was a special man who showed a great devotion to his family. I am sure you will have many memories to cherish. - Posted by: Myron Mazur (Friend) on: Aug 08, 2022

  • Jack made a significant difference in my life and i never had the chance to thank him. I had to see him in 1977 to get my 90 day leave to go travelling in Europe and the Middle East. I was determined to go travelling, but not expecting to get the permission to leave during my apprenticeship at CN. He looked at me after i had told him my plans and said, "I am going to grant you your request, and you know why?" He continued, "My son just returned from travelling Europe and it helped him realize how good we have it in Canada". He was right. I thought of him many times during, and after my trip was long over. Posthumous thank you and Rest in Peace Jack. - Posted by: Bryon DeBaets (CN Carman (retired)) on: Aug 07, 2022

  • Although Jack was my dad’s (Tom Broadbent’s) cousin, my brothers and sister called him Uncle Jack and I have nothing but the fondest memories of him and my Aunty Bev. Sorry to hear of his passing. Love to all. Michael Broadbent - Posted by: Michael Broadbent (Cousin) on: Aug 06, 2022

  • Growing up in Transcona and being friends with his 3 sons Lionel, Jack Jr. and Craig I got to know Jack as a young man and even better later on as a member at Pine Ridge Golf Club. By then he was well into his Golf Repair business and I spent many hours visiting with him whenever I brought a club in for a tweak or repair. ( he always wanted to know why I needed my club fixed and the story behind it lol) Once in his basement his storytelling and conversation would keep you there and the time would pass very quickly. He loved the company and conversation as did I. I know for a fact this was true for many people who would visit the Wright home. I would also see him and wife Bev and their friends regularly at the golf club. Both Jack and Bev were wonderful people and the door was always open whenever you arrived and they always made you feel welcome. Have fond memories of those times and of Jack himself. Rest In Peace Jack! - Posted by: Frank Porco (Family friend) on: Aug 06, 2022
