Marlies Dyck passed away on Thursday, July 28, 2022 at St. Boniface Hospital after a difficult and courageous battle with cancer.
Marlies will be dearly missed by her husband Robert Dorbolo; sons, Cameron, Devin, and Michael, and her furry companion Milo.
She was born in Winnipeg on August 24, 1964, to Gerhard and Anna (Friesen) Dyck. Being the only girl among three brothers, Karl, Paul and Alvin, made her the strong woman she was, and prepared her for the role of matriarch in the Dorbolo household - once again outnumbered by boys. Her caring and generous nature were reflected in her work as an occupational therapist. She spent 34 years helping people, often children, overcome personal challenges to live better lives.
Her presence will always be felt at the family cottage at Falcon Lake, which was a big part of Marlies' life for over 40 years. It brought her much peace, joy and time to knit countless socks, hats, and other creations. From her window seat, she could simultaneously track a stitch count, carry on a conversation, and direct the household.
We honour Marlies by remembering and carrying forward her formidable energy and spirit to bring more laughter and love to those around us.
A celebration of her life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on August 11 at the First Mennonite Church, 922 Notre Dame Ave.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation. From the donate site, you can choose to direct the gift to Palliative Care.

Condolences & Memories (19 entries)

  • Our condolences to the Dorbolo and Dyck families. I didn't know Marlies well but our paths crossed on a few different roads. We spent several New Years Eves at the Dorbolo's famous frozen river slide when our kids were young. Marlies was always gracious, hospitable and inclusive. She was also knowledgeable, connected and willing to give advice to my "special" family. She made an impact and will surely be missed by many. - Posted by: Lisa Wilcox (Acquaintance ) on: Sep 01, 2022

  • We are so sorry to hear about Marlies’s passing. Far too young. I remember her beautiful smile and that she was always happy and energetic. I was her neighbor next door and watched her grow up with her brothers. I had the same experience…we are tough girls for sure. Rest In Peace, you beautiful lady!!! 💐 - Posted by: Monica Sacher (Neighbor ) on: Aug 10, 2022

  • I'm so sorry to hear this very sad news. We knew Marlies from years of dog walks on the frozen river. Milo and our pup Oscar were friends who remembered each other without fail from one year to the next. I always enjoyed our chats about family, neighbourhood, and dogs as we walked along, and I looked forward to running into her. She was clearly an important presence in the neighbourhood and the whole city and we join all of you in mourning her loss. Sending our condolences to the family, with a special pat for Milo. - Posted by: Roisin Cossar (neighbour) on: Aug 10, 2022

  • I had the privilege of being in Marlies’ class at SMR, and working with her with preschool clients for decades. Her sense of humour, her smile, being short, (like me) made her the perfect preschool OT. With boundless energy and optimism, Marlies won the hearts of parents and the admiration of colleagues. I am so sorry for your unspeakable loss, Rob, Cam, Devin and Michael! - Posted by: Lena Kublick (Friend, colleague) on: Aug 07, 2022

  • I am so very sorry to hear of Marlies' passing. I remember many happy memories, playing with her - we both loved ping pong and our long bike rides to Kildonan Park. I also remember playing on sports teams with her at Westgate. Although we didn't keep in touch over the years, I'm very sad to hear that she left us so early. She will be missed. - Posted by: Doris (Bullinger) Hall (Friend & neighbour) on: Aug 06, 2022
