RICHARD (RICK) SHERBY
Rick passed away suddenly on July 31, 2022, at the age of 70.
Rick leaves behind his two children, Dana (Jon Burgoyne) and Michael, and two beloved grandsons, Harvey and Stanley. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of almost 40 years, Leigh, in 2018.
Rick was born and grew up in Winnipeg, and spent his career as a land surveyor, retiring from the City of Winnipeg in 2014.
Rick was a kindhearted, generous, caring man who would (and did) do anything for his friends and family. With his death, his children have lost a friend, a confidant, and a role model. When not spending time with his family, he volunteered at Assiniboine Park Zoo and the UWSA bike lab. Rick loved to be active; he rode his bike, kayaked, worked outside and camped during the warmer months. Music was a huge part of Rick's life and a passion he passed on to his children. He played numerous instruments, played an active part in the St. Paul's Anglican Church Rejoice Group and took in live music whenever he had the opportunity. He also loved to travel, visiting Mexico every winter, and taking many wonderful trips with his wife, including Greece, Hawaii, and the Panama Canal (to name a few). His two grandsons held a special place in his heart, and he would spend time with them whenever he could, taking them on adventures and showering them with attention.
Rick lived his life to the fullest, and while he wouldn't have any regrets, it was still not enough time with him, and he will be forever missed.
In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
A Celebration of Life will be held in mid-September, with full details to be published at a later date.
The family would like to thank the attending members of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service along with the ER staff at St. Boniface Hospital for their professionalism and compassion during this difficult time.

Had many a day in the field working with Rick. Music was always on and swapping stories when a tune spurred a memory. We have lost a pure gentleman with his passing. My condolences. - Posted by: Grant Campbell (Co-worker) on: Sep 11, 2022

Spent time with Rick in the field surveying. We always had the music on, swapping stories from our early years when a song brought on the memories. Rick was a mentor, great supervisor, but mostly a friend! - Posted by: Grant Campbell (Coworker) on: Sep 11, 2022

I am a cousin of Ricks. My Dad Bill (William) Sherby was a brother of his dad Joseph Sherby. Our family consists of 5 children. I was the oldest Suzanne Norton, Joanne Wiebe, John Sherby, Chris Sherby and Kip Sherby. We spent most of our time together when we were younger. Rick was great but at the time 5 yrs made a big difference. I remember listening to songs by Peter, Paul and Mary with him. Unfortunately last time I saw Rick was at his Moms funeral (My Aunty Simone). Just because you don't spend a lot of time together doesn't mean you don't grieve. We have memories that will live on. Dana I don't know if you remember my work party and you were our waitress. the guys decided inform you we were related. I am so sorry to you and Michael's family for your loss. May the Sherby name live on. - Posted by: Suzanne Norton (cousin) on: Aug 19, 2022

Rick was a member of our after-school crew at his grandkids elementary school whose sweet presence will be sorely missed. Always the brightest smile on his face greeting everyone, always happy to follow his grandkids wherever they were playing. Such a vital, kind and adventurous human who is gone far too soon. 💜 - Posted by: Lauren MacD (Friend of Dana & Jon ) on: Aug 16, 2022

Rick was a lovely person. Rick was greatly respected by everyone in our profession. He went above and beyond to help run our association for many years. Rick was one of the first professionals I had the honour of meeting when I was trying to get my professional designation. Rick was always supportive and always had a kind word. When I was a young professional and had a question Rick would always be willing give of his time. I was fortunate to run into Rick some years back in an airport. We got talking about the usual stuff, but as we parted I told him what a great person he was and how much I appreciated him and how our whole profession loved and respected him. I am grateful for that happenstance meeting. He will be missed. My condolences to your family. Wilson Phillips - Posted by: Wilson Phillips (professional colleague) on: Aug 09, 2022

I was both surprised and saddened to hear of Richard's passing, and wanted to echo some of the kind comments about him that have already been posted. Richard was an upstanding guy not only to his grandsons and kids, but also to his wife, and despite her numerous and complex illnesses he would "hang in there" with her and do all he could to make her life a better one. He took his wedding vows seriously in that regard; not a guaranteed thing these days, and his volunteering, good lifestyle habits and role modelling, musical outlets and steady work habits all showed us that he was a person trying to make the world a better place, and that he would be sincerely missed at his passing. He should have stayed in this world for another couple of decades, but life's not fair, and all of us should give our loved ones a hug when we hear news such as this. - Posted by: Richard Blouw (retired physician) on: Aug 09, 2022

I was saddened to hear of Rick's sudden passing. I first met Rick when he was in his second year in survey technology at Red River Community College. I was a newly employed instructor one month late into the final semester. I welcomed him as a Manitoba Land Surveyor into the profession. I have followed his career as a valuable member throughout the years with some pride. My sincerest condolences to the family for their loss. May his life be a continuing inspiration. I knew Rick for more than 30 years. He was a colleague, mentor and friend. He was kind, honest and humble. He was intelligent and pure of heart. He has not left his family and friends, he has just taken another presence in the lives of all those he loved and cared for and will always be in your hearts. May your tears and loss be replaced with smiles and happy memories. - Posted by: Cathy Gagnon (Friend and coworker) on: Aug 07, 2022
