Every now and then I get a looming feeling about my beloved former voice teacher. After working with her for a number of years, we no longer met with each other. I had moved. She had moved. But my heart stayed connected to her. I saw her several years ago at a NATS event (I eventually became a voice teacher and still teach at York University). She was brave, non-disclosing, nonchalant, but it was obvious she was having health challenges. Today, I googled her, as I do every couple of years, and found out that she had passed last year. Admittedly, I feel deep despair. She was one of the only level, brilliant-hearted, kind role models I have had in my life. One day in lessons she said to me, "I think you'd make a good voice teacher." I don't think she said that because she was struck by some great talent in me. I think she saw the emotional deficit in me and she intuited the power her words would have. That's what happened. Her words were like a fairy wand that sprinkled magic over me. One sentence bolstered the rest of my life. I love you, Tannis Fast Vetter. I'm so grateful that your beauty and I crossed paths. - Posted by: Rita di Ghent (Student) on: Sep 16, 2023
