DANIEL NEWELL
September 17, 1952 August 4, 2022
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of an amazing man, Dan Newell, after a brave and lengthy fight with cancer.
Dan will be remembered by many for his sense of humour and his deep love of his family and friends. He always brought joy to any gathering.
Dan had a successful career in IT, but he always found so much joy and relaxation in his daily 10 km. walks through local parks. His passion was his love of woodworking that he learnt from his grandfather and from his close friend, Dunc. His projects and designs brought him great pride.
Dan's greatest joy was his daughter Miranda and the strong bond they shared. They would talk daily about their lives, struggles and the future. He was a very proud father of the strong successful woman she is.
Dan also had a close and loving relationship and will be missed by his granddaughter Alysia (Bryton), stepchildren, Kelly, Kim (Craig), Kevin (Hannah) and grandchildren, Cole (Michaela), Mack (Ella) and Ethan and great-grandchildren, Kylen and Myla. Family meant the world to Dan and he was always willing to show support to them in whatever they took on.
He also leaves to mourn his sister Peggy and brother-in-law Kevin and their family in Thunder Bay who he visited often. Dan's brother Wayne (Maribelle) lives in Honduras but was stranded in Winnipeg for over 16 months due to Covid restrictions, and during that time the brothers became best friends.
He also leaves a huge hole in the life of his loving wife Lynn. Side by side they formed a strong bond for 20 years that saw them through many happy fun filled times as well as the daily struggles he faced living with cancer. He is my hero.
Dan had a large group of very close friends that he loved to spend time with cracking jokes, enjoying the challenge of trying to win at the Army & Navy meat draws, and giving people a hard time who did win. Dan and Lynn also travelled, curled, and played billiards with friends. His presence will be missed by many.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at GH4 at Health Sciences Centre for the care they gave Dan throughout his last days and to the compassion they showed to him by permitting his family and friends to frequently visit with him right till the end. It made a huge difference not only to Dan's comfort but to ours.
Although his light has gone out his strong legacy will carry on in our hearts and memories.
Dan did not want a funeral but there will be a celebration of his life at a later date.

Its through Lynn we had the pleasure of becoming friends with Dan. Dan and Darwin were always teamed up at for company Golf Tournament. Each year provided us with stories we will tell for man more years to come. Dan's golf bag wasn't just filled with clubs on the course, Peach Snapp's, Sambuca and Fire Ball shots were readily available at every hole! Darwin had so much fun being Dan's golf buddy, that there were a few times Darwin never made it to BBQ part of the evening. Dan often showed up at the office with coffee for Lynn and of course offered to get us girls some too. He was funny, flirty and a great person to be around. His work working skills were amazing and I'm lucky to have some wooden tools he made for my customers and personal gifts he made that I'll always cherish. Dan you are and will be forever missed. You left a wonderful family and great friends behind. We're so happy to have been able to laugh and joke with you. When I think of you, I smile. Rest easy my friend. - Posted by: Darwin & Sheila Lamb (Friends) on: Aug 22, 2022

Dan was truly a great man. From his unbelievable woodworking skills to his kind and fun hearted nature, Dan was always there to lend a helping hand. When my wife and I bought our first house my wife had envisioned this beautiful patio set sectional made out of wood, after looking at stores and how to build we kind of thought it was out of the picture. Well along comes Dan. In a mere couple weeks I get a phone call telling me my full blown cedar sectional was ready for pickup. My wife and I hurried on down to grab it. It was exactly what we envisioned! I asked Dan how much I owed him for it all. He simply said it was a present from Lynn and him. I couldn’t believe and felt guilty accepting such a gift of the magnitude! But that’s the type of man Dan was! Eager to help and always wanted to see a smile on the person opposite of him. You’ll be missed Dan. Rest easy. - Posted by: Jesse Antonyshen (Friend) on: Aug 17, 2022

I recently had the pleasure to know Dan through work – talking daily sometimes several times a day before ever meeting him in person and feeling like I had known him my whole life. In our chats about work, we had a chance to get to know a little more about each other daily too. Realizing that we both lived in Thunder Bay and actually attending the same high school. I very quickly became fond of Dan – his advice and knowledge. Sending my deepest condolences to his family. - Posted by: Jennifer Mazur (Coworker) on: Aug 15, 2022

I have only good memories of Dan, he was always up for laugh or funny story at the annual Christmas lunch or Golf Tournament he definitely made them special or just golfing at the Canoe Club or their place for a Bar-B-Q with him and Lynn. Would often say to Kathy if you can't get along with Dan you have a problem. We are fortunate to have some of Dan's Handy work from his love of wood working. As at one of the Christmas lunches was telling Lynn I wanted to make a bar Lynn said talk to Dan and a few weeks later I was at there place and Dan is drawing up Plans and before you know it it was under construction. The finished product was exactly what we were after it is definitely the WOW factor and a extremely nice conversation piece. Remember My friend COWBOYS DON'T SAY GOODBYE THEY SAY SEE YOU LATER. WILL SEE YOU WHEN I GET THERE. RIP thoughts and Prayers to Lynn and Miranda and Family Doug and Kathy - Posted by: Doug Palmer (Friend) on: Aug 14, 2022

What’s a wedding celebration without Elvis! Seems we all had Dan a great appreciation for the king of rock and roll. Having Lynn and Dan to share all of our life’s most important moments (ok Elvis too) made these times the most special. Adam’s little push into the Ceasers fountain didn’t hurt either! Forever remembered, Sherri and Jeff. - Posted by: Sherri Doherty (Friend ) on: Aug 13, 2022
