RYAN EDWARD DOUGLAS BOURGET
Ryan passed away from glioblastoma at Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg on August 11, 2022. Ryan was comfortable and surrounded by family and friends, all shaped by Ryan's singular curiosity and courage, intelligence and compassion.
Ryan was a husband and father, engineer and entrepreneur, athlete and musician, world traveler and nature lover, with the energy and capacity to fit into one day what Ryan's wife Cathy calculates would take the rest of us at least one hundred more.
Ryan is survived by his wife, Cathy Kuryk, their children Miller and Jordie Bourget, parents Kim and Roger Bourget, sister Cindy, brother Dane, niece Alexcis, nephew Ryden, mother and father in-law Lydia and George Kuryk, sister in-law Wendy Kuryk-Tataryn, brother in-law Paul Tataryn, nephew Christopher Tataryn, brother in-law David Kuryk, sister in-law Keri Hrabchuk, nieces Sophia and Zarah Kuryk, Bryan Ward, and Fran Young, along with an extended family proportional to the magnitude of Ryan's capacity to love.
Born November 29, 1980 at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, Ryan moved with his family to Carberry, Manitoba in Grade 6. After studying Mechanical Engineering at Red River College Polytechnic in Winnipeg, Ryan devoted most of his work after graduation to HERD North America, first as Director of Strategic Services and eventually as Director of Engineering. As co-owner of Masters of Metal Fabrication Limited, Ryan founded a manufacturing plant to produce stainless steel products in Foshan, China, conducting much of his professional work in both the western and eastern hemispheres, always eager to make new connections, often over new cuisines. Home in Winnipeg, Ryan devoted his philanthropic energies to the eight years he served as a member of the Board of Directors for Teen Stop Jeunesse, a drop-in center that reaches over 12,000 local children each year. He chaired the Board's financial committee and helped steer the organization's strategic initiatives to grow Teen Stop's resources and reach.
Ryan knew how to see and realize what could be. That was so the night he met his wife, Cathy, under the Northern lights at 2012 Winnipeg Folk Festival. With their young family, Ryan shared his love for playing piano and guitar and for summer sailing from Silver Harbour and West Hawk. Ryan circumnavigated the globe many times overon the hockey ice and the links, in the air, and on many foot trails. He said he had no one favourite place but never tired of his many trips to China, and was captivated by the love story behind the Taj Mahal. Ryan treasured nature and camping, and built fires that his family thought were always "bon." In his own words, Ryan relished "making things happen," and did so in his work, his friendships, and his passions. He left lasting impressions of the best kind.
Ryan was baptized February 21, 2021 at Blessed Virgin Mary Church, 965 Boyd Avenue, Winnipeg, where Ryan's funeral will also be held at 10:30 a.m., on August 26, 2022. A Celebration of Life will follow on August 27 from 10:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at Brazen Hall, 800 Pembina Highway, Winnipeg, MB, with memories of Ryan currently planned for 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ryan's memory to Cancer Care Manitoba Foundation, Teen Stop Jeunesse, or Food Matters Manitoba. I was honoured when Ryan asked me to be one of his Godparents in February of 2021. Ryan accepted Christ into his heart and began a beautiful personal relationship with Jesus. Ryan’s faith was tested to extremes during the last 2 years and he never once wavered. He would always say “we serve an awesome God”. He and I became accountability partners and as much as I spiritually mentored Ryan during this time he helped grow my own faith. He was a remarkable young man with the light of God shining in him. He brought this light to all those family and friends that would receive him. In the end, Ryan understood 2 Corinthians 5:8 “ to be absent from the body is to present with the Lord”. For the family, we pray for peace that passes understanding. May you take comfort in theLord’s promise of eternal life. Joe Tataryn (Godparent). - Posted by: Joe Tataryn (Godfather) on: Aug 26, 2022

I was introduced to the Bourget Family in August of 2020, and got to spend the next year with them on a regular basis. Ryan and I would drive to appointments and run errands talking about anything and everything. Ryan was a very special man and watching his strength and perseverance during the most difficult hurdle he would ever endure, was truly incredible. Ryan will be missed by many! - Posted by: Avery Joseph (Family friend ) on: Aug 22, 2022

We are so sorry to hear about the loss of Ryan. It was such a blessing when we moved in next door, to find out that we had such wonderful neighbours. I will remember the conversations we had together over a new beer we would try. I will hear him taking 2 steps at a time to get to the 2nd floor in building one. I will feel his energy and enthusiasm when he entered the room to talk about the topic at hand. And in the pain of his passing I am grateful for having known him as my life is better for it. - Posted by: Robert Vandenbyllaardt (Business Colleague and friend) on: Aug 20, 2022

We are so very sorry to hear of Ryan’s passing. We knew him through our connection with Herd and our daughter Avery spent much time with you all during the first year of his diagnosis. There is no doubt he was a strong fighter and did all he could to stay with you as long as he was able. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this most difficult time. - Posted by: Sandra and Brad Joseph (Friend) on: Aug 20, 2022
