ELSIE CRATE
Elsie Crate passed peacefully in her sleep Saturday, August 20, 2022, at Pinawa Hospital.
She is survived by her children, Francine, Doug and Michael (Jonathan); her siblings, Phyllis, Valorie and David (Darlene); grandchildren, Andrew, Steven, Craig, Cindy and Derek; great-grandchildren, Tyarra, Jaden, and Jeanelle; many nieces, nephews, aunties, cousins and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents, Frances and Wilfred Crate, her siblings, Harvey, Delmar, JoAnne, and nephew Barry LaForte.
Elsie had a long and varied career as a nurse, working in hospital and community settings, and was also active in the Manitoba Indian Nurses Association, and the Circumpolar Health Organization, travelling to Iceland in 1993. After obtaining her BN and Masters degrees at University of Manitoba, she went on to teach there. Elsie was a strong believer in traditional Indigenous teachings, and she incorporated much of this knowledge into her work with her students. In her home community of Fisher River Cree Nation, she worked hard to make a place for traditional Indigenous spiritual teachings.
The family would like to thank the medical and nursing staff at Percy Moore Hospital, Health Sciences Centre and Pinawa Hospital for their kind and skillful care. Special thank you to niece Tanis Thomas for her loving care of Mom in Pinawa. Thank you Carl for the tiny biscuits. Thank you to the firekeepers, Elders, family, friends and community members for loving support.
Mom will be laid to rest in Fisher River Cemetery on the morning of August 24. Pallbearers Michael Crate, Jonathan Augst, David Crate, Douglas Holowachuk, Ron Sinclair, Gilbert Sinclair.
Thank you Mom for all your teachings.
Condolences may be left on her tribute wall at www.gilbartfuneralhome.com
