MONTAGUE (MONTY) JOHN VIALOUX
1941 - 2022

After a lengthy and complicated battle with Diabetes Monty passed away peacefully surrounded by family on August 21, 2022 at the age of 81.
He leaves behind his wife Jean of 57 years; daughters, Lori, Brenda (Robert); son Grant; grandchildren, Jonah, Elijah, Mercer; and his beloved cat. Brothers, Douglas (Patricia), Ronald, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, James and William; and parents, Talbot and Gladys Vialoux.
Monty began his colourful life in Bissett which he would always consider home in his heart. It was there that he began his varied and diverse career path that would take him all over Manitoba. San Antonio Gold Mine, CN rail, The Dew Line, and City of Winnipeg Transit to list just a few. He and Jean eventually leased the Hotel San Antonio in Bissett with the goal of one day purchasing their own hotel. They acquired the Birchwood Motor Hotel in 1979 where Monty was truly in his "element". After successful business ownership he would later take positions with The Manitoba Hotel Association, Council for RM of Alexander and Manitoba Parks.
Even with a full plate raising a family and operating a business he was a dedicated generous volunteer in his community and elsewhere. The Bissett Historical Society, Crime Stoppers, Junior Achievement Program, Designated Driver Program, Victoria Beach Community Club, Cottage Country Business Association, East Beaches Wellness Centre and Pine Grove Association to name just a few.
And then there were his passionate hobbies including music, baseball, antique cars, ancestral history, gardening, curling and entertaining. But what he was best known were his "Monty Jokes". His greatest pleasure in life was making people laugh "My name is Tucker not Sucker"!
The family would like to extend a special Thank You to Dr. Bruneau and the nursing staff at Pinawa Hospital for the exception care provided.
We would like to extend an invitation to join us for a Celebration of Monty's Life at the Beaches Community Centre (Victoria Beach Sports Field), 65 Arthur Rd., Hwy 59 N, Victoria Beach, Manitoba on September 17, 2022 at 2:00 p.m.
Antique cars are encouraged.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Diabetes Canada or The East Beaches Animal Services.

Condolences & Memories (16 entries)

  • I spoke with Monte many times having a beer or buying beer in the 70’s and 80’s when my folks lived in Belair, Mb. Wish I could bring those days back. The Birchwood was a great place when Monte owned it. He was a great guy. Years later I met his brother Doug as we both worked as Housekeeping Managers in Winnipeg Hospitals. My sympathy to Doug and the rest of the Vialoux family. - Posted by: Alex Zebrun (Aquatince ) on: Sep 22, 2022

  • Enjoyed chatting with Monty every time I had the pleasure of seeing him in an abundance of scenarios, whether getting mail or sitting for coffee at saffies. I was so hoping he would return from his hospital stay a few weeks ago but not to be. My brother & I offer our sincere condolences on his passing. - Posted by: Karen skinner (Beach acquaintance ) on: Sep 01, 2022

  • Monty would sit in with our 10:00 coffee group at Saffies from time to time. We talked about Classic Cars of course, including his 68 Dodge Monaco Convertible. And yes, he would crack a joke or two....some good, some so bad, that we would laugh all the more. His golfing joke was one of the worse....we would plead with him, not to repeat this joke...but he did and then we would all have a good laugh. Condolences to your family Monty. - Posted by: Denis Letain (Friend) on: Aug 30, 2022

  • Many times I would see Monty sitting with my dad at the cabin in Belair. I would arrive Friday afternoon and see them together playing cards and listening to old country music on the record player. He always had a funny joke, And was a class act. I know this for a fact, Monty and my father are sitting together in a better place called heaven. Deepest condolences for the family. He will be missed. - Posted by: Keith Tates (Friend) on: Aug 29, 2022

  • To Jean & Family my heartfelt sympathy! I new Monty for many years starting in our little town of Bissett until I moved to Victoria & all the many rides I got when he would pick me up in Selkirk once a month and reminisce all the to Wpg . To attend the B.H.S luncheon. He always had a new joke & many stories of his younger years & all the people who came & went in our little town.(sometimes a story of the mischief that he & my brother Walter had gotten into!) I will cherish these memories . My thoughts & prayers are with you & your family . The world needs more people like Monty. Edna - Posted by: Edna simperl (Long time friiend) on: Aug 29, 2022

  • All of our sympathy and love to Jean ,Lori, Brenda and Grant and families. You all, along with Monty himself have endured a heavy amount of sorrow, along with never ending hope over the past two + years. I salute you, his family for your love and care. Monty was a special friend of over 60 years for us. He was a role model, a charismatic personality, a good steward of his home town; Bissett, his communities, his businesses and his friends, but especially his family. He lit up a room with his presence. In his heyday he was a provincial level fastball windmill pitcher, with a sense of humour always. He was a "learner", no experience or adventure was a waste of time to him. He always took away valuable knowledge "that he learned from" (his own words). So goodbye old friend. You have left us a legacy to live up to and learn from. You are a shining example of a superstar human being. • I had the good fortune of meeting Monte years ago in the East Beaches as a friend of my brother, David; then again through our mutual membership in the Manitoba Hotel Assn. Monte proved his talent for promotional skills by turning the Birchwood into a bustling business with deep roots in the community. After selling the Birchwood, the Hotel Assn., in recognition of his gift for effective promotional abilities, asked Monte to take his experience on the road and help struggling rural hotel operators set up hotel promotions, tailored to their own communities and unique circumstances they faced. Sitting down for a beer with Monte was always enjoyable; there was never those awkward pauses when no-one had anything to say; Monte Lit Up The Room with his sharp wit and limitless humour. He will be missed by all who knew him, but will no doubt be making piles of new friends in that Big Beverage Room in the Sky. - Posted by: Bill Sparrow (friend) on: Aug 27, 2022

  • Monty and I go back a long time period during his lengthy and varied career. Fastball during his bus driving period was a successful venture - winning a championship. His hotel ownership was also varied and successful. Monty was a good friend and we kept in touch even though we were provinces apart. My sincere sympathy to Jean and family. Rest in Peace Buddy. • Our sincere condolences. Monty's presence brought smiles and laughter to all. He will be missed by many. He was always the life of the party and will not be forgotten. The memories are many. Monty, Jean and the kids being gracious hosts to the Mounties who dropped into their residence in Bissett at 1 am on the week-ends for snacks and "tea". The social functions, birthday and Christmas parties, coffee breaks, and lunches at the Birchwood and their home. The many golf tournaments and curling bonspiels where Monty was always the center of attraction, not necessarily for his sports prowess, but certainly for his crazy antics, jokes, and stories. He always made those around him laugh and smile. He knew hundreds of people, but thousands knew Monty. Thank you for all the great times Monty. • To friends and family, please accept my condolences for your loss. Only knowing one small part of your family, (Brenda) I do know how fond and proud she was of her Dad - and no doubt vice-versa. Over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to hear many of Brenda’s fond stories of Dad & Mom. And reading this farewell, I see a life full of achievements and wonderful experiences. I’m sorry for your loss. Heartfelt sympathies. - Posted by: Martin Stringer (Friend if the family) on: Aug 27, 2022

  • Never met Monty without hearing one or many of his famous jokes. Remember him being at entertainment night in Texas and the comedian picking him to hassle but soon realized he had picked the wrong person because Monty was funnier than him. Loved to meet him picking up mail as you always left laughing. He was loved by many friends and neighbours and will be missed. My sincere condolences to Jean, Lori and family - Posted by: Carol Draper (Friend) on: Aug 27, 2022
