MARLENE STEELE

Marlene Anne Steele (nee Hartley; 1938-2022) died peacefully in Ottawa on August 25.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Don, sons Brent (Chris and Andy) and Jeff (Kevin), sisters-in-law Lorraine, Gloria, and Bev, stepbrothers Don and Doug (Meryl), her many cousins, nieces, and nephews as well as their partners and children. She was predeceased by her parents (Donavan and Thelma), her stepfather, Arthur Lawrence, her brother, Dale, and her brothers- and sisters-in-law Garry Steele, Pat & Gary Condie, and Joan Lawrence.
Marlene was born and raised in Winnipeg, where she spent the majority of her life except for a short period in Toronto in the early 1970s and her last months in Ottawa. She was a loving wife, mother, and friend who always shared her joy for life, appreciation of beautiful things, and emotional wisdom. Her passions included flowers and gardening, animals (especially her Goldendoodle, Rosie), the family cottage at Matlock, travel such as many winter stays in Palm Springs with her husband, sweets, her business, Country Charm, co-owned with good friend Joyce Myska, and time spent with family and friends including her beloved Girls Club. Over the course of her life, she volunteered with the Grace Hospital, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Khartum Ladies' Auxiliary (where she served as President), and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra's Women's Committee.
For the loving care and support provided in her last years and days, her family extends its heartfelt thanks to Tasha Biefeni as well as to the staff of both Comfort Keepers Winnipeg (in particular, Pam Cummer) and the Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus ICU and 5th Floor. At her request, no funeral will be held. Donations in her memory may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society.

  • Marlene was a special lady. I feel privileged to have spent so much time with her the last few years. Although I started out as her house cleaner, our relationship was so much more than that. I remember when she told me to stop calling her Mrs Steele and to start calling her Marlene. She said “my friends call me Marlene”. She was like family to me, and I will treasure the memories I have of her. My deepest condolences to Don, Jeff and Brent. - Posted by: Tasha Biefeni (Friend) on: Sep 01, 2022
