Peacefully, in the early hours of Sunday, July 31, 2022, our beloved aunty Marg left this life to begin her eternal rest.
Just over 94 years ago - July 2, 1928, to be exact - Margaret was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Nicholas Gerhard and Agatha (nee Klassen) Penner. She was the second addition to a family of new arrivals, whose birth surely must have helped her parents strengthen their roots in this new land and move them further past the hardships they had endured escaping the Soviet Union, three years prior.
Her early years were spent on the family farm in Petersfield, Manitoba. It was a life of austerity that demanded all family members pitch-in as soon as they were able. When questioned as a senior citizen about her notoriously good health, she would always reply that it was her years of manual labour on the farm as a youth, that set the body up for robustness in later life.
Life after the farm included moving to the city and establishing new roots, namely, a home and a career. Her recently uncovered record of employment from Federated Insurance states her first day as January 25, 1960 with retirement in 1993, 33 years during which time she enjoyed a rewarding work life filled with friendship and opportunity.
Retirement years brought more time for pursuits (both new and old), which Aunty accomplished at a steady pace: needlepoint, gardening, puzzles (of the 3,000 piece variety, to keep the mind sharp), travelling to far off locales, sewing towels and book bags for the OSU Children's libraries in Ghana and of course steadfastly being there as a second Mom to generation after generation of nieces and nephews, their spouses and yes, even their pets.
Margaret is predeceased by her mother Agatha (nee Klassen); her father Nicholas Gerhard Penner; her older brother Nick and his wife Eileen; her sister Helene and her husband Pete Kroeger; her sister Selma and her husband Ross Irwin and her great-niece Charlotte Penner. She will be greatly missed by her younger brother Alvin and numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to staff at Deer Lodge Centre 4-East for the care they provided to Margaret during her stay there.
A celebration of Margaret's life will take place at First Mennonite Church of Winnipeg, 922 Notre Dame Avenue, Thursday, September 8 at 11:00 a.m.
