FLORENCE JEAN BIRCH
(nee KING)
October 27, 1928 - August 13, 2022
Jean Birch, a wife, mother and a woman loved by many, quietly passed away in the presence of loving family, under the compassionate care of the staff at Winnipeg's River Park Gardens at the age of 93.
She will be mourned and missed by her loving husband of 42 years, Tony; his three children, Wayne (Pia), Gary (Michelle), Audrey-Anne McIvor (Geoff); her three sons, Doug Menzies (Jan), Greg Menzies (Julia), Mike Menzies (Cesare); daughter-in-law Karen Eastwood; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jean was predeceased by her first husband, Stan Menzies; as well as her brothers, Jimmy and Bob and sisters, Wynn MacDiarmid and May Johnston.
Jean loved life and lived it fully, bravely, and honorably. She loved our family without conditions, obligations or judgement and her affection for us had no limits. She was actively interested in our lives and expressed genuine concern for our health and well being. She maintained a beautiful balance between knowing when to guide and nurture and knowing when to step back and let us grow through our own experiences. Her loving maternal nature grew with the arrival of each grandchild and they all have precious and unique memories of their "Nan."
Jean was well known for her fun-loving nature too, which was usually at its peak when she was with her sister May. They would go to great lengths to get a laugh, especially from each other.
Jean and Tony loved their summers at the cottage in Lake of the Woods and winter holidays in southern Spain. A move to Victoria in the 90s meant that they could enjoy outdoor activities year-round. They returned to Winnipeg in 2016 to be close to family once again.
The Menzies family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Tony and Audrey-Anne for their steadfast love and devotion to Mum. You brought her great joy and comfort always, but especially during her Alzheimer's journey.
Both of our families offer heartfelt thanks to the staff and caregivers at Deer Lodge Tower 3 North. Your kind-hearted considerations for our Mum afforded us all peace.
A private family celebration of Jean's life will be held on September 16. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to a charity of their choice.
