It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Hila Ateah. Hila passed away peacefully on September 14, 2022, during her stay in the Pine Falls Health Complex at the age of 85.
Hila was predeceased by her parents, Alfred and Val Thomas, her siblings, Ferd, Delmar, Langford, Harvey, Vernon (Bunny), Doreen, Erma, and husband George. Hila will be forever lovingly remembered by her children, Kevin (Sandra), Sue (Mark), Kurt (Ann), Paul (Steph), her grandchildren, Deb, Bob, Josh, Jess, Quin, Jayden, Lilly, Masion, Aiden, her brother Brian (Joanne), and numerous nieces and nephews.
Hila was born in Selkirk, Manitoba in 1937. She was brought home to Balsam Bay and at a young age moved to Grand Marais with her family where she attended school. In grade 10 she received the Goulet Scholarship for academic achievement. 30 years later she attended evening classes and acquired her GED, but her educational journey was not yet complete. At age 48 Hila moved to Winnipeg and attended Sturgeon Creek Regional Secondary School to obtain her grade 12 biology in order to enter Red River College's Dental Assisting program which she graduated from at the age of 50! Hila worked as a dental assistant in Winnipeg from 1989 to 2002 and upon her retirement moved back to Victoria Beach.
Hila enjoyed working at the Victoria Beach Parking Lot where she drove cab for 23 summers. She was active in her community volunteering for the Merry Makers and Victoria Beach Sports Club. Hila also enjoyed curling, snowmobiling, playing all types of card games especially canasta, but most of all she enjoyed time spent with her family and friends.
The family would like to extend our gratitude to the doctors and staff at the Seven Oaks Renal clinic, the home nurses that visited every week, Pine Falls nursing staff, Dr. Puff and Laura Klammer of the palliative care team.
Celebration of Hila's life will be held at the Beaches Community Centre (Victoria Beach) on Saturday, October 15 at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to St. Michaels Church ND Inc., PO Box 304, Victoria Beach, MB R0E 2C0 or the Kidney Foundation of Canada.

  • Kevin, Sandra and family, I was so sorry to hear of Hila’s passing and extend my deepest sympathy to all her family. I always enjoyed my visits with Hila when I’d see her at mom’s in Winnipeg many years ago and I greatly admired her going back to school at a late age to achieve her goal of working in the dental field. What a woman! We also had such enjoyable chats in her retirement when I would stop by to see her during my summer visits at Victoria Beach. My memories of Hila will always be very special. May she Rest In Peace. Corinne Bruyere Bonney Lake, Washington - Posted by: Corinne Bruyere (Cousin) on: Sep 24, 2022
