JANE KATHLEEN BEST-MORTON
(nee CHRISTIE)

1946 -2022

It is with the deepest sadness we announce the death of Jane Kathleen Best-Morton on September 20, 2022 at Brandon Regional Health Centre. She had been healthy and active until the morning she experienced chest discomfort and deteriorated rapidly. Following Jane's wishes, it was decided that no drastic measures would be taken to extend her life. Jane passed peacefully in the presence of her daughter Christie and pastoral care.
Jane is predeceased by her first husband William (Bill) George Best and her second husband Charles (Chuck) Lloyd Morton. She leaves behind her children, Christie Stewart (Ron Stewart), James Best; step-daughters, Suzanne Morton (Amilcar Mendes) and Kim Morton (Gord Grieder); grandchildren, Cory and Kryslyn Stewart (Jesse Hallam), Ryan and Erin Mendes, and Anna Grieder and great-grandson Rome Hallam.
Born August 29, 1946 and raised on Kingston Row in Winnipeg to adoptive parents, Vida and Keith Christie, Jane developed a strong faith and love of public service. Early in her career at Manitoba Forestry, she fell in love with her boss, Bill Best. Within a few years, they married and their two children soon followed. Both Bill and Jane were dedicated members of St. Mark's and later St. Bart's Anglican parishes for many years. They were also active members of the Anglican Summer Camp community, with Jane serving as hostess for several years in the 1980s. After Bill passed in 1999, Jane decided to give love another chance. After one date, she knew Chuck Morton would be the one. They married in 2003 and travelled extensively during their short time together. After Chuck passed in 2008, Jane's faith was tested again by a battle with breast cancer. While convalescing with family in Brandon, Jane made the choice to move there permanently, combining households with Christie and her growing family. There she became an active member of the St. Mary's Anglican parish and continued the studies that would lead her to become a Deacon in 2019. Jane remained active in the Diocese of Brandon, performing services in Carberry and Brandon right up to the Sunday before she passed.
A full Communion service to celebrate Jane's life will be held on Saturday, October 1 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Matthews Cathedral, 403 13 St, Brandon, MB R7A 4P9, Bishop William Cliff, presiding.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to one of the many charities she supported and that supported her, including CancerCare Manitoba and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • I have fond memories of us neighborhood kids playing kick the can, hidenseek, red rover and mother may I. Jane lived close to us and I was always envious of her because her mother let her eat canned goods right out of the can. When she was married, she was a good Samaritan by adopting our dog. Condolences to the family. - Posted by: Elaine Wallace (Neighbour) on: Oct 05, 2022

  • I have many happy memories of Jane and her birthday parties. I lived across the street from the Christies at 92 Kingston Row until I was 6. There was a large group of children in the neighbourhood and we ran up and down the river bank playing games. Jane was always a happy child and I was sorry to lose contact with her after we moved to Elm Park Road. Mary Buckingham (Jack) - Posted by: Mary Buckingham (childhood friend) on: Oct 05, 2022

  • As kids, Janie's house was the Go-To place for all her friends. Her mom, (who reminded me of Rosalind Russal) and her dad, (a huge man with a huge heart), welcomed all us kids into their home with lots of fun and laughter. Janie got a white car on her 16th birthday. She named it Angle. Like every thing else in her life, even then as a young teen, she treated it with care and shared the fun. As a youngster, Janie and I had many sleep-overs. Vida, as Janie kiddingly called her mom and Auntie Hazel, who lived with them, made these times amazing. Janie had every record on the hit parade and we would dance. And man, could she dance. It was so much fun. I think she danced through life. She is so loved. - Posted by: Barbara Linklater (Life time friend) on: Sep 30, 2022

  • I met Jane through my friend Heather Lynch (Lamonica). She was lots of fun & invited me to live with her, & her Mom & Aunt on Kingston Row. I loved them so much. I asked Jane to go to my hometown of Fort Frances with me and she did. It normally takes 4 hours to go there but with Jane driving her Mom's F85 and daring as she was, we made it in 3 hours. Quite thrilling!! We had a wonderful time together. Many of my close friends call me Don as did Jane. Thanks for the wonderful memories Janie. Loved you lots. • I met Jane at Anglican Island Summer Camp. Right away I had a connection with Jane and Bill. No matter what challenges I was given, Jane always had a funny story or life experience to help me find my way when I was challenged. I didn’t have the best home life growing up, and Jane and her family became my favorite people in the world to me. I was baptized on the Island and Jane and Bill became 2 of my God Parents. I love Jane and will miss her dearly. - Posted by: Dawn-Ellen Wiebe née Driftz (God Daughter) on: Sep 25, 2022

  • Jane was more like family at Sobering Auto than a customer. When she came to the shop I would say " Hi Jane need your car serviced?" She would say No I came for my Big Sobering hug but while I am here you might as well service my Buggy. We would all laugh Jane carried with her the ability to bring positive thoughts along with a smile that lit up the room. It was our pleasure to have Jane as part of our lives. Condolence to all her family who she loved dearly from Don and Joyce Sobering - Posted by: don sobering (friend) on: Sep 24, 2022
