MARY EVA SOKULSKI
(nee SMITH)
September 2, 1944 - September 10, 2022
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Sokulski of Winnipegosis, MB, who left us peacefully with family members by her side on September 10, 2022 at the age of 78 years.
Mary is survived and will be sadly missed by her daughter, Kathleen (Trevor) Chernecki; her dear grandsons, Zennon and Maksym; sisters and brothers, Rosalie (Willie) Bornn, Loretta (Gordon) Dyck, Barb (Maurice) Routhier, Ernie (Marliss) Smith, and Alfred Smith; many nieces and nephews and also many close and extended family members and friends. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Ken Sokulski in 1987; her parents, Helen and Alex Smith; and her eldest brother, Peter Smith.
Mary was born in Dauphin, MB, and spent her youth in Winnipegosis as a member of a family of seven siblings. She moved to Winnipeg where she married Ken and raised her daughter Kathleen while working full time as a registered nurse. She returned to join her siblings in her hometown of Winnipegosis after her retirement.
Mary will be remembered for her special caregiving nature which she demonstrated as the oldest daughter caring for her younger siblings, during Ken's illness and after, as a single parent to her daughter, and throughout her lengthy and successful nursing career. She loved to cook, garden, sew, knit, play cards, visit over coffee and tell funny jokes and stories. Mary touched the lives of her loved ones by always being there for them in times of joy but most importantly in times of hardship. She kept in touch with old friends and stayed connected to her family, all who love her and miss her dearly.
Cremation has taken place and a private interment at Glen Eden Cemetery will follow. A celebration of Mary's life will be planned for a later date.
