PETER WILMS
1951-2022

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father and Opa, Peter Wilms, after a courageous battle with cancer. He died peacefully and went to be with his Lord and Saviour in the late hours of Tuesday, October 4, 2022, with his dear wife, children and extended family by his side at Victoria Hospital.
Peter was born to Peter and Katharina (Regier) Wilms on September 13, 1951, in Shestakovo, Russia and was a brother to his older sister, Irmgard.
Peter was a man of faith, honesty, integrity, very kind and a wise gentleman. He loved telling stories, to which he always had an audience, while listening to people before forming his own opinions. He loved history, especially knowledgeable of the Mennonite heritage. He loved sports, reading books, sports magazines and doing Sudoku. He loved traveling, watching soccer (Liverpool being his favourite team, which won a game on the day he died). He was very much a meat and potato guy, not a fan of any kind of vegetable.
Peter was predeceased by his parents and his sister. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife Maria of 44 years, his daughter Amanda (Dwayne); his sons, Randy (Lindsay) and Matthew (Katie) and his two precious grandsons, Finn and Elliot, as well as cousins, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Funeral service for Peter Wilms will be held at The Warehouse (Riverwood), 270 Gordon Avenue Winnipeg, MB on Wednesday, October 12, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. A viewing will be held on Tuesday, October 11, 2022 from 7:00 - 8:00pm at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street Winnipeg, MB, and on Wednesday prior to the service. Interment will take place following the service at the St. Vital Cemetery.
In his memory, donations can be made to "Friends of the Mennonite Centre in Ukraine", a charity that was close to his heart.

  • I met Peter some 25 years ago, and during that time I got to know a person who I could honestly say, he was a very good person to know. Peter was kind, giving and honest. I recall one time he had seen me at the airport and he made his way to come by and say hello and to ask about me. His first words were always your name and how you were. it sad to hear of his passing but I think that’s the way Peter was always thinking of others. See you later Peter maybe in window heaven. - Posted by: Jim (Friend) on: Oct 24, 2022

  • So sorry to hear the news Amanda. Hugs and thoughts to you and your family. - Posted by: Rick and Maria Saydak (friends) on: Oct 12, 2022
