PHYLLIS SCHIOLER
(nee HENDERSON)

April 17, 1930 - September 30, 2022

It is with love and sadness that we announce the passing of our beautiful mother, mother-in-law, grandmother (Ammi), sister, auntie, and friend, Jean Phyllis Schioler, on Friday morning, September 30. She was 92! Mom was comforted in the loving care of her family as she passed peacefully with songs and prayers in her cozy home. She is now in heaven with the love of her life, husband Michael Paul Schioler (Mike) and with God her Heavenly Father.
Phyllis was also predeceased by her mother Caroline (Edith) Henderson (nee Mason), father David (Clarence) Henderson, brother James (Jimmy) Dorland Henderson, brother David Gordon Henderson and wife Noreen, brothers and sisters-in-law Dr. Peter Sudermann, Bill Mann and son John, Thomas Lorne Schioler, Elsa Woods and husband Mel, Kathleen Skynner and son Henry John and daughter Carla and son-in-law David Solleveld.
Phyllis is survived by her two sisters, Barbara Sudermann and Naomi Mann. The three sisters together were better known as the "Ding-a-ling" sisters!!! Mom is also survived and lovingly remembered by her five children, spouses, and 15 grandchildren. Her family is her "Big Beautiful Legacy!" Son Tom Schioler (Margaret) and children Julian, triplets Raquel, Toban, Chelsa, and Katrina; son David Schioler (Sharon) and children Jordan, Connor, and Dane; son Kai Schioler (Ursula) and children Liam, Keiran, and Bryn; daughter Kimmie Solleveld and children Shannon and Danielle; daughter Linda Kennedy (Robert) and children Sarah and Melissa, and many nieces and nephews.
Phyllis was born in Winnipeg in her home at 302 Baltimore Rd. in Riverview. Her older brother David called her "Lulla" and she was the eldest sister to Barbara, Naomi, and Jimmy. Following the sudden passing of her little brother Jimmy, Phyllis became a big sister/friend to war time child Peter Oates from London, England. He lived with their family for several years during WWII. Phyllis adored her mother and father, grandparents, aunties, uncles, and cousins. She talked about them often and shared so many funny and loving stories.
Phyllis grew up attending four schools: Riverview, Lord Roberts, Robert H. Smith, and Kelvin High (first grade 11 Co-Ed class ever!). Following graduation in 1947, Phyllis attended Success Business College and graduated with honours in Secretarial Practice in 1949. She received the silver medal from the Business Educator's Association for accuracy, speed, and efficiency in Typewriting. Her secretarial positions included: Wholesale Grocers, Air Services Branch of the Department of Transport Canada, Eaton's Department Store (where she used the first electric typewriter), and James Richardson & Sons. Mom was very successful in all of these positions but then "landed a job" with Trans-Canada Airlines (TCA) where she became a Passenger Agent. In those early days in the 1950's mom said she really enjoyed the job and did everything! She loved telling us about her most famous story of having coffee with Louis Armstrong during the nightshift while he waited for the second plane with his band and instruments. He asked Phyllis to come and hear him play at the Don Carlos Casino, but she declined the invitation to be with her Mike!
In January of 1950 Phyllis met Mike Schioler one morning at the bus stop and the rest is history! Mom and dad married May 27, 1955, moved to Montreal, and soon welcomed Tommy and Davey. Then a move back to Winnipeg brought them the surprise of their lives…TWINS! Kim and Kai. Then on to Regina where their fifth child Linda was born. Once back in Winnipeg in 1969 our family was back for good! As we kids got older, mom went back to work at Eaton's Polo Park in cosmetics and then in the women's clothing department. Phyllis loved fashion and she had a great sense of style and flare! She had fun working with all of the Eaton's gals.
Not only was mom a busy and wonderful mother, she was a very active, involved grandmother (Ammi) to her 15 grandchildren. Her grandchildren meant the world to her, and their photos were plastered all over her fridge! Mom also loved all of her daughters-in-law and sons-in-law and coined them "The Things". Her goal was always to be a good mother-in-law.
Phyllis had a unique and dynamic personality! She was so full of energy that our dad would get tired just watching her. Mom never stopped and was a total night owl. Mom was the life of the party and loved having fun. She could tell a good joke and had a great sense of humour right up until the day she died. Mom had the biggest heart, so generous and always doing for others. She supported several charities for people in need of a helping hand and also volunteered at church activities throughout her life. Mom loved entertaining large family dinners, parties, special events and especially putting on so many Christmas Eve smorgasbords for all of her family and extended family. She made tons of food and loved seeing the family all together. Phyllis adored her many friends, and her parties were always fun to listen to. Mom grew up spending her summers at Victoria Beach since 1930. She cherished her V.B. memories at her childhood cottage 302 3rd Avenue and was thrilled to buy her own cottage at 302 7th Ave. in 1969. She loved decorating with antiques, painted the cottage several times over, and lugged every single rock home to outline her yard! She loved gardening, knitting, quilting, crocheting, and sewing. Mom worshipped the sun and would spend all day on the beach with us suntanning with Mazola oil. She was even president of the Victoria Beach Club in the mid 1970s. Mom was also a big sports fan and loved watching the Winnipeg Blue Bomber football games and the Winnipeg Jets hockey games. She could also out-cheer anyone at any of her three sons' hockey games!
Mom, we were so blessed and lucky to have you for so long! You will be greatly missed! During this season of Thanksgiving, we give thanks for your life, your laughter, and your love! Whenever any of us said we love you, your reply was always "I love you more!" So, mom, Ammi, now it is time for all of us to say:

"We love you more!" Until we meet again, "See you in the Funny Papers"

Although Mom was deeply religious, it was her request for us not to fuss or worry about having a big service. However, her family will celebrate her life together at a later date. We will celebrate both Phyllis and Mike Schioler (Ammi and Far Far) as we listen to the tunes, we grew up with like Harry Belafonte's "Mama, Look A Boo Boo", Al Martino's "Blue Spanish Eyes", and especially Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline!"
Our family would also like to thank all of the WRHA homecare health care aides, respite workers, and nurses who helped look after mom on a daily basis. Truly a wonderful team of people! Thank you to mom's doctors, Dr. Ray Singer of 40 years and Dr. Nicole Bristow. We thank friends and family who have sent flowers, cards, and kind messages, so lovely! If people wish to make donations, I know mom would greatly appreciate any of the following: Grace Hospital Foundation, Salvation Army, Diabetes Canada, Alzheimers Society Manitoba, or a charity of your choice. Thank you.

  • Linda and Robert, Melissa and Sarah, and extended family. My deepest condolences to you all. I have amazing memories with your mom. She had a smile that would always make your day. Your mom’s sense of humour was amazing. She loved and was so proud of all her children as she always talked about their accomplishments. She always had advice for anyone, who needed it. I loved going to Eaton’s at Christmas with my dad and she always helped him pick something for my mom. Your memories of your parents will be held in your hearts and kept forever.
