AFFLECK: Dennis, 75 years, beloved husband of Christine Affleck, father of Jeff and Tom, passed away in the Souris Health Centre on Saturday, October 15, 2022. Dennis was born and raised in Charlottetown, PEI, to Walter and Georgina Affleck. Dennis loved growing up on the island with his two brothers (Les and Brian) and sister (Anne), while keeping busy fishing, playing baseball, football and especially hockey. Dennis excelled at the game of hockey and received an athletic scholarship to Saint Dunstan's University. Following university, Dennis had the opportunity to play hockey professionally, but decided to follow his heart and join the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. After graduation from depot in Regina, Dennis was first stationed in Gillam, Manitoba which he truly loved. In 1971, Dennis received the Medal of Bravery for saving a life and de-escalating a serious situation. During his Gillam years, Dennis developed a real passion for the outdoors, specifically hunting and fishing. Dennis was later transferred to Winnipeg, where he worked several years in the drug section with some of his best friends. In June of 1976, he met and married wife Christine after meeting each other through mutual friends. Not so soon after, they were transferred to The Pas and welcomed their first child Jeff in 1981. A year later they would settle in Brandon, where they welcomed their second child Tom in 1983. Dennis was a very active father for the boys, as he was always willing to coach their sports, build them an outdoor rink, or take them on some entertaining family trips. For his final stop with the RCMP, Dennis was transferred to Souris, Manitoba where he became Sergeant for the area. Dennis quickly fell in love with the small town. He formed lifelong friendships through spending time at the golf course, rink, ball diamonds and of course "The Lodge." As years past, the love for his community grew; he would drop anything to help someone out, regardless of who needed the hand. He initially retired in 2005 from the RCMP as a Sergeant after 35 years in the Force. After a brief four-month holiday from the beat, he returned to the RCMP and served as a Constable for 7 more years in the surrounding communities before retiring for the second time in 2013. His favorite past times included travelling with his wife Christine to Mexico during the winter months, cutting wood at the lodge, golfing, and "happy hours" with friends and family. His grandkids were his pride and joy. Whether it was watching his granddaughters play hockey or teaching his grandson how to run the bases at the ball diamond, he was always there for them. He wore the title of Grandpa proudly. He loved his family with all his heart, he loved his friends like they were family, he loved his community like he'd never left, and as we grieve his passing, we find comfort in knowing how much we all loved Denny. Dennis is survived by wife Christine, sons Jeff (Christine) and Tom (Brooke), grandchildren Alexandra, Andi, and Madden, as well his brother Les and sister Anne. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Souris, Manitoba on Saturday, October 22, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. followed by a time of fellowship and refreshments at the Souris Golf Club. Private family interment in the Souris Cemetery. In memory of Dennis, donations may be made to the Souris Golf Course or to the Souris Dog Park Fund, both donations can be sent c/o Municipality of Souris Glenwood Box 518 Souris, Manitoba R0K 2C0. I had just completed my recruit field training at Swan River Det. in the summer of 1972 and in the fall, I believe, I met Dennis at the railroad siding, having just come down on transfer from Gilliam. He played hockey for the local Swan River Canadiens. We shared accommodations so I got to know him quite well. We were together one night in Swan River. We noted a 1/2 ton truck damaged all along the left side. The driver said he hit a bear on the highway so we took him, and his passenger, back to the area of the accident scene. We eventually located the wounded bear up a tall pine tree, in a long line of trees leading into a farm house. Since the bear represented a danger to the residents, we had brought along a rifle and eliminated the threat......not without lifting a few hairs on the back of our necks!! Wildlife was called and we processed the accident accordingly. Although we parted ways a year later, I remember Dennis as a kind-hearted, thoughtful person, but well able to deal with the rougher side of life. He was a credit to himself and The Force. As this note will attest, I am just learning of his passing today, Feb 28th, 2023 and would be remiss if I did not extend to you my condolences. Dennis & Christine we’re neighbours of ours in The Pas for a few yrs…..they enjoyed fishing as much as we did….great neighbours & were greatly missed when they left….did go for a visit in Souris…..the boys were growing so fast….condolence to u Christine & family.thinking of u..just heard today….stay strong..ur all in my prayers.. Dennis was a character better known as a true blue what you see is what you got type. He was known as a fierce teddy bear but soft as putty when it came to his love for his family and community. He loved the outdoors and his friends at THE LODGE, Our community will miss his him in numerous ways. Sincere condolences to his family and thanks for sharing this warrior with us for many years. Met Dennis in 1973 when we played hockey together. I was transferred to BC in 1976. After that, I would see Dennis at the RCMP Western tournament once a year. Dennis was a great defenseman and a good person. I have nothing but good memories of him. My sincerest condolences to the family.
