BRYAN ROBERT PLANTE
February 20, 1977 – October 14, 2022

With immeasurable sadness we announce the passing of Bryan Robert Plante. Bryan passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at Health Sciences Centre (HSC) October 14, in Winnipeg, MB with his loving wife, children, mother, sisters and close relatives by his side.
Bryan leaves his wife Vanessa Plante, daughter Alyssa, son Lucas, mother Judy Riedel, grandmother Rose Jernberg, sister Larissa Prairie (Keith, Julia and Makayla), stepsister Bonnie Petrowitsch (Jodi), parents-in-law, Dick and Hilda Dueck, and brother-in-law Ian Dueck (Tracy, Jonah, Cohen, Kyren). He also leaves numerous family members in Canada, USA and Germany, co-workers and very dear friends.
Bryan was predeceased by his father Robert Plante and stepfather Achim (Archie) Riedel.
Bryan came into and left this world very self determined, and was fascinated with figuring how things worked, especially anything mechanical. When he was around three he wanted his own big people tools. Fascinating events happened as he removed, tightened, or hammered his way through his home, never damaging - just fixing. This included removing my car license plates to keep them safe, removing the spring off the screen door as it made the door get stuck in the middle and figure out how the arms of his sisters' Barbie dolls worked. This interest in problem solving of complex mechanical and electrical issues lead to a 22 year career in Diesel Mechanics (Red Seal) with Big Freight in Steinbach.
Bryan, whether it was your love and dedication to your family, your quiet sarcastic humour, your work ethic, organizational skills, special gift of problem solving or reading only the last page summary of the textbook before an exam, or building your home, you aced it. Your skills also included St. John Ambulance, Boy Scout (Chief Scout Award) and coaching hockey.
Bryan we will miss you immensely and we are not sure how to move on but we are trying.
A special thank you to Dr. Karen Toews Steinbach, who wouldn't give up until there was a diagnosis, Dr. Amrit Malik, Cardiologist, who lead the team at St. Boniface, the nurses for their excellent physical and emotional care. Thanks to special friends Ange and Mike and to Mark and Big Freight Systems for standing behind Bryan and family during his illness.
Everyone is invited to the Celebration of Life this Monday, October 24 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel in Steinbach, 204-346-1030.
In lieu of flowers, we ask donations to be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation or plant(e) a tree, any variety, anywhere.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I am deeply sorry to hear of the passing of Bryan. I took care of Bryan at the Health Sciences Day Care Nursery when he was there in the 4-& 5-year-old room. Sometimes when you work in a daycare centre a child will have a special attachment to you. Bryan and I had a mutual attachment and enjoyed each other’s company. I know that with certainty. After all, he literally gave me the shirt off his sister’s back! I had (and still have) a camel collection. Sometimes I would take some of my camels to visit the children at the daycare centre. Brian knew my love for camels was deep. When his sister Larissa showed up at daycare wearing her toddler-sized “I’m Dry” camel T-shirt and Bryan heard me comment about it, he convinced Judy that I needed to have this shirt to add to my camel collection. I remember the day the Plante family donated it to my collection so that my stuffed camel, named “Klinger”, would have something to wear. I also have a bittersweet memory of greeting Bryan as he returned to daycare after his first morning of French Immersion kindergarten. I checked in with him to see how his morning went. When I asked about his new teacher, who of course only spoke French to the children in the immersion program, Bryan’s response to me was that she “didn’t know what she was talking about”. I wanted to laugh because it was a sweet explanation communicating what he was feeling, but part of me wanted to cry because I recognized how lost he must have felt all morning not knowing what the teacher was saying to him. After I left the daycare centre, I eventually began teaching in the Early Childhood Education Department at ‘Red River Community College’. Every year, when I taught Preschool Child Development, I would tell my students about a young boy who told me about having lightning in his blankets. That was Bryan. How he described his experience was a perfect example of a preschool child’s way of thinking. He was explaining the world around him without yet having the needed word in his vocabulary. Since then I have always and will always remember Bryan when I see ‘static’… Judy, I hope you are feeling the hug that I’m sending you. My heartfelt sympathy to all of Bryan’s loved ones. - Posted by: Pat Hogue (Child Care Worker @ HSC) on: Oct 23, 2022
