MAUREEN GEORGINA MAHON
October 14, 1940 - October 16, 2022

Maureen was the first-born daughter to Lily and Alf Mahon. Having grown up in Fort Gary, surrounded by wonderful friends and neighbours, she later settled only minutes away, in the Fort Rouge neighbourhood and resided there for the remainder of her life.
After graduating from high school, Maureen attended St John's College and the University of Manitoba. Following graduation, she taught in the private school system for several years, but ultimately found her niche working at the University of Manitoba, Extension Library where she selected appropriate reading material for distant communities, prisons and schools.
While working her way through university, she became a proof-reader for the Winnipeg Tribune. She was a faithful daily newspaper reader into her 80s. She loved reading and channeled this passion into volunteering at Riverview, where she would read to patients. She also volunteered her time teaching English to new immigrants and helped edit essays and books for many people. Maureen adored animals and was a proud and loving owner of many pets throughout her life. They were her best buddies. She also took great pride in gardening and had quite the green thumb throughout her life.
Maureen led a quiet life by choice, but had very faithful friends in Betty, Mary, Pauline, Linda, Claudia, Ada, Magdalene and her reliable gardening friend, Joseph. She also had a special place in her heart for her cousin Sheryl Atkinson, of British Columbia, of whom she remained close with over the years, despite the distance. One of her friends recently said "She was such an example of kindness and positivity. An amazing one-of-a-kind woman."
Maureen was predeceased by her father in 1998, mother in 2006 and her only brother-in-law Mark in 2021. She is survived by her sister Joy; her nieces and nephews, Cindy, (Rob), Kerry, Dan (Leah), Brian (Eunhee) and great-nieces and nephews, Isabella, Hanna, Alyssa, Maren, Ben, Kayden and Raya.
Proud of her Irish roots, we quote the following Irish Blessing, which always hung proudly in her home

"May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
the rains fall soft upon your fields and,
until we meet again may
God hold you in the palm of His hand."

Rest in peace, sister, aunty and friend. We love you and will miss you.
The family sincerely thanks the many doctors and nurses at Grace Hospital for their professional care in Maureen's final days, as well as Marina, during Maureen's short stay in the care home.
