JACQUES PREFONTAINE
April 10, 1933 – October 22, 2022

It is with great sadness and a lifetime of wonderful memories that we share the news of our dad's passing. Although he struggled hard to recover from recent surgery, it just wasn't meant to be.
He will be forever missed by his wife of 66 years, Colette (Isidore and Cyprienne Lemoine), his daughters, Murielle Bugera and Lynne Péloquin (Gilles) and his son Gabriel (Inge Tyles). Dad is reunited in heaven with his parents, Antoine and Marguerite (Bélanger), his brother Claude and his wife Maria (Aubry), his sister-in-law Yvette and her husband Paul Boily, his brother-in-law Aurèle Lemoine and his son-in-law Larry Bugera. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Ivan (Sheri), Daniel (Anja), Jacqueline (Bruno), Valerie (Colin), Eric (Clode), Rémi (Natalie), Jenelle (Colton), Sara and Eva, and his ten great-grandchildren. He leaves behind his sisters, Suzanne (Gordon Parks), Madeleine (Roland Gaudry), brother André (Rita Gauthier), sister-in-law Hélène (Robidoux) and brother-in-law Jean-Marc (Julia Sawchuk).
Dad was born in St-Pierre-Jolys where he lived all his life. At 17 years of age he was hired by the De Salaberry Co-op and two years later was promoted to manager. C'est à ce moment qu'il rencontra sa future épouse Colette Lemoine de Sainte-Agathe. Ce fut le coup de foudre. Courses de chevaux ... parties de cartes ... salles de danse... ça s'annonçait bien! In 1954 he was recruited by Lavergne Electrique where he was able to further develop and showcase his skills. Many long days were spent travelling to homes in southeast Manitoba to repair appliances and to sell the first televisions. After 19 years at Lavergne's, Dad made the decision to build his own store. St Pierre Furniture opened its doors in 1973, with the help of his colleague Maurice Hébert. It ran with great success until his retirement in 1997. In addition to being a businessman, Dad enjoyed being a farmer. We moved from our humble home on Jolys Avenue West to the family farm in 1976. He was very proud of his contribution to seeing it become a Century Farm in 2011.
Dad was a great athlete whether it was bowling, baseball, curling, golf and of course hockey as a goalie. He participated in and organized many bonspiels and shuffleboard tournaments. Dad was very competitive and cherished the many friendships he made through every sport. He also served many years as school trustee, board member of the curling club, the seniors' club and the parish finance committee. Dad and Mom enjoyed many great trips around the world, trips that suppliers provided as rewards for outstanding sales and Dad won many awards.
The family wishes to thank the staff at the Bethesda Regional Health Centre and the Ste. Anne Hospital for their care and for their assistance in helping to comfort our parents who were their patients in separate hospitals during these past few weeks. We encourage donations to the foundations of the above-named hospitals or to the St. Pierre Hospital Foundation.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
