GILBERT DAVID HARMS
1963 - 2022
It is with great sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of Gilbert David Harms on October 26, 2022 at the age of 59.
Gil will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by many, including his wife Mary, his children, Steven (Holly) and Christine (Josh), as well as Mary's children, Mark (Amy) and Cora (Jordan). His loving and silly antics will be deeply missed by his three cherished grandchildren, Allison, Nolan and David. He is also survived by his older brothers, Craig, John Leonard and Albert. He was predeceased by his parents, Sara (Sally) and John Harms.
Gil was born in Winkler, Manitoba and grew up on the family farm, just south of town. He was an avid hockey player and captain of the Winkler Fliers and could often be found on a motorcycle or on the golf course. Gil was a remarkable man who brought light and laughter into the world around him. His quick wit often left others smiling even in casual everyday encounters; whether you knew him or not he was always friendly and outgoing.
For those he knew and loved he was there in a heartbeat to lend a hand and help with any task. He thrived on hard work and giving of himself. He was skilled at many things and nothing was too daunting for his sharp, analytical mind.
Gil was a registered CPA and owner of G.D. Harms CMA Ltd. He deeply enjoyed the interpersonal encounters with his clients and getting to know the people behind the numbers; this was his passion. He took a sincere interest in other people's stories and opinions and built long term trusted relationships with clients.
More recently he developed an interest in woodworking and crafted beautiful gifts for others. He honed his skills through study and practice and created objects of extraordinary beauty and precision. Gil's work was a mixture of art and function; whether it was a chess board, cutting board, tea box, wine rack, sleds for the kids or an Adirondack chair. He could make anything he set his mind to, and these projects will live on in the lives of his loved ones.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, November 13, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the United Way or Winnipeg Foundation in Gil's honour.
Those we love don't go away,
they walk beside us every day.
Unseen, unheard, but always near;
still loved, still missed and very dear.

Gil was a wonderful man and true professional. Gil helped me for many years with my accounting needs. A few years ago he bestowed one upon me one of his first original cutting boards. It's a beauty, just like Gil was. RIP and condolences. - Posted by: Marina R. James (former client & friend) on: Dec 09, 2022

I worked with Gil many years ago at Carte but he also became my Accountant when Ron & Joanne retired. I was so happy to get to know Gil and very thankful always for the work he did. Gil was a kind, gentle soul and it was always such a pleasure to talk to him and or to see him. It is just so sad to see such a wonderful person pass. Gil you will be missed by so many! - Posted by: Lockie McLean (Client and Friend) on: Dec 07, 2022

Terribly saddened by the news of the family’s loss. I’ve told many, of my relationship with Gil and am so proud to have known him for many years. He worked as a draftsman at Carte Intl while I was the CFO. His infectious personality allowed him to be friends with anyone in that office. One day, out of nowhere, he came into my office and asked a very poignant question! “ Ron, what do I need to do to get on the path to become an Accountant???” I’ll skip over many years in our lives, but the intervening time that passed by resulted in his successfully doing just that- He became a professional accountant, a CMA!!! After working in an industrial setting for years,a requirement of the profession, and deciding to enter the realm of public accounting using home as his office, he built up a public practice. Obviously this is a very difficult thing to do, but he did all these things. By now I had moved my career and joined my wife in her public accounting practice. During his growth we talked, golfed and one day, I invited him to join me and my many friends and business acquaintances, to join us at the St. Nick’s Ukrainian Catholic Church hall to celebrate the annual Ukrainian Sportsman’s dinner. I think he fell in love with the event, if enjoying the food like he did and the comradeship of fellow professionals,most of whom had roots in Winnipeg’s north end, were any indication. He was so proud and pleased that I could find an extra ticket to include his wonderful, son , Steven, to join him. This went on for years. You can only imagine the enjoyment that we all had together. Then came the magic moment where he felt he was in a position to acquire the accounts of KUHTEY and company, our public practice. Joanne and I were pleased to help him through this transition period and knew that he was on his way. This story ,with many chapters, chronicals the many years of friendship and professional association that I enjoyed knowing Gil, but most importantly, is a tribute showing his tenacity in augmenting his professional status in order to help give his loving family a closer and happier life. Joanne and I miss you Pal! Ron Kuhtey, CPA Joanne KUHTEY, CPA - Posted by: Ron and Joanne Kuhtey (Colleague and friend ) on: Nov 26, 2022

I’m so saddened to hear of Gil’s sudden passing. He gave me such good advice and when I had a very bad year financially, he did my taxes for free! Whenever I needed advice I would email him and he always replied promptly. I will miss his fatherly advice. My condolences to his family❤️ - Posted by: Barb Burgess (Client) on: Nov 05, 2022
