MADDALENA BONGIORNO
1931 - 2022
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Maddalena Bongiorno on November 2, 2022 at the age of 91 years.
Mom passed away peacefully with her family by her side. Left to cherish her memory are her son Guy (Angie) Bongiorno, her daughter Enza Bongiorno, her granddaughters, Madeline (Mark) Smith, and Joselyn (Brian) Danyluk, great-grandson Nolan Smith, and great-granddaughter Charlotte Danyluk, sister Carmela (Francesco) Acquisto, sister-in-law Beatrice Bullaro, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father Rosario Bullaro and mother Francesca Bullaro, husband Carmelo Bongiorno and brother Francesco Bullaro.
Mom was born in Casteltermini, Sicily, Italy where she lived until her early 20s before setting sail alone across the Atlantic to Halifax, then boarded a train to Winnipeg where she joined Dad, her husband-to-be. They were married for 65 years before Dad passed in 2018. Mom was a loving and devoted wife, indulging Dad with home cooked meals, homemade bread, and freshly made pasta, all prepared with love. They raised two children together and instilled their Italian values and love of family.
Mom was a strong, independent, and determined woman. At the beginning of their marriage, Dad gave Mom his paycheck and she asked "What am I supposed to do with this?" and he replied "You'll figure it out". She did and continued to manage the finances and become a landlord of rental property they owned. Mom also worked as a seamstress, initially working from home so she could raise her family and then working in a small factory after the kids were in high school. Mom's family was her pride and joy. Mom loved to gather with family and friends and prepare and share meals around the table. She will be greatly missed by all her loved ones.
Thank you to the staff at Home Care and at Health Sciences Centre for your care and compassion.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 9, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. in Mary, Mother of the Church, 85 Kirkbridge Drive, with condolences one hour prior. Family respectfully asks that all those in attendance refrain from physical contact while offering condolences.
Pallbearers will be Mark Smith, Brian Danyluk, Mike Acquisto, Rosario Bullaro, John Bullaro, and Mario Bullaro.
In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations in memory of Maddalena may be made to the Arthritis Society of Canada.
