MARY STOYKO (ANTONIW)
Born: Nov 11, 1930
Date of Passing: Nov 01, 2022Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or Memory
It is with much sadness that the family of Mary Stoyko announce her quiet passing on the evening of Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at Holy Family Nursing Home where she had resided for the last several years. Mary was born in Winnipeg on November 11, 1930 to Roman and Aniela Antoniw. She was predeceased by her husband Fred in 2013 and eldest son Raymond in 2007.
Mary graduated from Isaac Newton High School and then proceeded to find employment at Winnipeg Wholesale. Shortly after, she met, fell in love with and married Fred Stoyko on June 23, 1951 and began a life together in Winnipeg. They resided for a short time with her parents while Fred and other family members constructed a bungalow on Magnus Avenue. Soon they became parents with the arrival of Raymond, John and Susanne. Surrounded by family and wonderful neighbors it was a great life full of love and nurturing surroundings.
As life went on, a newer house was purchased in Garden City and this afforded a larger yard, with extensive flower beds which she took great delight in growing. Both Mary and Fred tended to their garden tirelessly and it always produced a fantastic crop of vegetables.
Weekends here would see Mary and Fred hosting their children and spouses and grandchildren, offering love and support to everyone. Mary took great pride in her cooking and every meal was followed by a delicious dessert, much to the delight of all.
Mary also found enjoyable employment as a library technician with the Winnipeg School Division at St. John's High School, where she made many new friends. After her retirement she regularly joined them at social gatherings to catch up on all the news and events.
A quiet woman, Mary found friendship in her closest neighbours and on many weekend evenings she and Fred could be found visiting or having company over, to play cards, to chat about many of life's interests or just reveling in their good fortunes.
With the passing of Fred in 2013 Mary moved to The Towers at Holy Family the following year, and again made friends quickly amongst the long-term residents. Many a day would be spent in the common areas of the complex, with a coffee and snack and always with conversation flowing freely. As life brought additional health struggles Mary accepted them without complaint and found comfort in the constant care provided by the staff at the nursing home side of Holy Family.
Mary is survived by her son John and wife Carmen and grandchildren Justin and his partner Dario, Matthieu and his wife Lisa and great-grandson Bennett, by her daughter Susanne and husband Michael Maskell and by her daughter-in-law Judy and grandchildren Andrew and fiancé Kendra and Nadine.
The family would like to offer special thanks to the staff of Holy Family Nursing Home for the care and love bestowed on Mum over the years. In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation to be made to a charity of one's choice.
A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, November 12, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street, Winnipeg. Interment will follow at Holy Family Cemetery.
