FATHER LEONCE AUBIN
October 31, 1936 ~ November 4, 2022

Father Léonce Aubin, priest of the Archdiocese of Saint Boniface, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 4, 2022 at ActionMarguerite Saint-Vital at the age of 86.
He will be sadly missed by his sister-in-law Jeannine (Maurice) Aubin, her children Réal (Sandra), Angèle Lavergne (Michel), Aline et Jeannette, his brother-in-law Con (Rachel) Koevoet, his children Paul (Holly), Dennis (Germaine), Peter (Kim), Michael (Paula) and David (Elizabeth), his brother priests and numerous friends. Léonce was a caring and attentive brother, brother-in-law, and uncle. He warmly cherished moments with those he loved, sharing life together and being present for family and friends.
Léonce was predeceased by his parents Théodore and Angeline, née Tougas, his brother Maurice and his sisters Thérèse and Rachel, as well as his brother Hervé and sister Sylvie, deceased as infants.
The son of Théodore Aubin and Angéline Tougas, he was born in Ile-des-Chênes, Manitoba, on October 31, 1936. Father Léonce attended Leblanc School in Ile-des-Chênes. He completed his seminary formation at the Major Seminary in Saint-Boniface and was ordained to the priesthood on June 11, 1961, in Saint Adolphe, Manitoba, by Archbishop Maurice Baudoux.
During his sixty-one years of priestly ministry, he served as secretary to the archbishop, notary for the Marriage Tribunal, Assistant at the Saint Boniface Cathedral, pastor of Christ the King Parish, director at the Minor Seminary, pastor at Holy Family Parish in Saint Boniface, pastor at Saint Eugene Parish in Saint Vital, Pastor at Saint-Joachim Parish in La Broquerie, and pastor at Notre Dame Parish in Transcona.
He pursued further studies in Family Pastoral Care at Saint Paul University in Ottawa. He served the Archdiocese as a member of the Council of Priests, Diocesan Co-ordinator of Family Pastoral Care, member of the Personnel Committee, chaplain for the Diocesan Council of the Catholic Women's League, member of the College of Consultors, Episcopal Vicar for the Chancery, and Chancellor.
Throughout his years of dedicated service, Father Léonce was well known for his kind and gentle smile, and for his willingness always to be of generous assistance in whatever capacity. His service on many archdiocesan committees was invaluable. Rarely did he react to various situations – rather, he responded to those situations after thought and prayer. He showed a profound respect for others, both his brother priests and his brothers and sisters in the laity. His quiet but quick sense of humour was very much appreciated.
Burdened in his latter years by various health issues, Father Léonce continued to say an unqualified "yes" to requests for his help in replacement ministry. His humbleness and gentleness mirrored his God's humbleness and gentleness. During the COVID years and his declining years, Father Léonce's presence at many archdiocesan events and gatherings was greatly missed.
Father Léonce, you were an important part of this archdiocese. The Archdiocese of Saint Boniface thanks you and thanks God for the gift that you were. "Well done, good and faithful servant" (Matthew 25:21).
The funeral mass, presided over by Most Reverend Albert LeGatt, was held on Saturday, November 12, 2022, at 10:00 a.m., with viewing beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the St. Boniface Cathedral. Interment followed in the Cathedral cemetery.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • May he Rest in Peace. A wonderful and caring priest, much loved by my late mother and myself. - Posted by: marc desrosiers (parishioner) on: Nov 20, 2022

  • L'Abbé Aubin, votre repos est grandement mérité suite à une vie exemplaire. pgs - Posted by: Paul G. Smith (ami) on: Nov 19, 2022

  • A quiet and prayerful man, Fr. Aubin touched our lives in so many ways as our parish priest. He will truly be missed. - Posted by: Valerie Bergeron (former parishioner) on: Nov 17, 2022

  • We were fortunate to have Father Aubin perform our marriage in 1976 at the Christ the King church. And that is when I learned that we were distant cousins on my father side. I was always proud to be able to say I was related because he was truly a very genuine person. He served all the communities very well I’m sure he’ll be able to rest now. - Posted by: Don & Kathy Dupuis (Distant cousin) on: Nov 10, 2022

  • Father Leonce was part of our group of friends for many years. He was an inspiration at our many 'parties' and gatherings. We were together in Ireland in 1992. He visited Ron and me many times when we lived in Gimli, and had lunch together when we moved back to Winnipeg. His quiet manner and good sense of humour will be remembered always. My condolences to his remaining family. - Posted by: Eva M Haddad (Friend) on: Nov 10, 2022
